: My media blasted car is rusting!

I had my gto convertible stripped by a media blast shop a couple days ago and it is starting to get some surface rust. I was under the impression from the shop that it would be ok as long as it didn't get wet, right.

What type of primer should I use to seal it up? Can I just DA what surface rust has formed off, or do I need to take some other precautions?

The metal work is mostly done however there are a few spots that will need attention, so I'm not sure if I can just ask a shop to spray it.

Any ideas on where to go from here?

I had mine sprayed in K2 primer immediately after
it was blasted..I'd get something on there pretty quick.. I'd think you could sand it off in some manner. I'm sure you'll get better feedback..

When i did mine I was also concerned about rust. I used this stuff from home depot called OSPHO and just wiped it worked great my buddy left his car for weeks like that no problems. It cost about 10 bucks and took 10 minutes.
Good Luck

Probably was over kill, but we used a body wash product (After the Media Blast on the body) recommended by the paint shop that sold us our PPG Primers. After the body wash, it turns golden/rusty color after you rinse it off. Then we sanded it, then the PPG etching primer, then the PPG epoxy primer(s).

Hope this helps.

You can use "Metal Prep" and just spray it on and wipe the rust off. I think it's a 3M product.

Just something on those "Body wash" products or metal treatments, stated right in the PPG P-sheets under both the etch primers and the metal treatments, its not required or advisable to apply an etch primer over the metal treatment.

Both products contain an acid that bite into the metal etching it, but if you apply the etch primer over the treatment the two different acids can react with each other and cause adhsion problems. This just doesnt apply to PPG, both Dupont and S-W paint all state this about appling etch over metal treatments.

If you choose to use the metal treatment skip the etch primer then go straight to the expoy primer. Or if you prefer skip the metal tretment and apply etch primer, then expoy.

You can da the surface rust with something like 180 grit, no need to use 36 or even 80 grit, those will just require sanding of 180 to remove the scracthes. The car will rust no matter what, it rusts espcially fast after being sand or media blasted. It dont matter if you live in Minn or CA there is moisture in the air that will cause it to rust. One method to help prolong it is put some fans in the shop and have them blow over the car. That will keep the air moving around, sounds stupid but works wonders graemlins/thumbsup.gif

biggblokk,

What type of media was used for the blasting? I am getting ready to have mine done and when I asked the guy if he would spray primer he said that he would not worry about it because he uses aluminum oxide rather than sand and his air supply is very dry. Said he did his jaguar and has been bare for months and no flash rust at all. I'm not convinced but this guy has a very good reputation. We have a lot of humidity here in NC, but it would be nice to get it home and finish the body work before sending it for paint. I'm planning on having it primered anyway, but still curious if yours was done with the aluminum media.
