I wanted a car with a 4 speed so thats what I bought. A 4 speed car.

Its a lot more fun with a manual on the street in my opinion. But if I were going to build a drag car. I would want an automatic instead.

Prefer a four speed, but if it's over 650 horse, I'd take the automatic.

Manuals are more fun, but auto's are easier on parts :)

Definatley prefer a 4 speed, especially if it's over 650 horse. ;) As long as I am not paying for the new ones. But still, what could be more fun the 650+ horespower and a 4 speed.

Depends on the car...
For an all out cruiser, I'd like an auto. For something on the performance side, a manual trans increases the fun factor. :D

I have a 4 speed and wish it was an automatic.I can arrange that. Bring it over, and we'll get to swappin. ;)

I wish every car I own had a manual.

...but why only 4 gears? I want a 6-speed

After 16 years of a 700R4 I have acquired a T56, hopefully going in this summer after I get my shop built.

You'll have to drag yourself away from block breaker to do that Dan :)

I prefer both. Every daily car I have had since I was 21 has had a manual. If I ever had a sports car it would be a manual. The Excursion we have at work for towing the boat is an auto, and I like it that way. My convert is an auto, and I like it that way. If I bought a truck, I would seriously have to think about getting an auto. Bigger vehicles become a chore to drive with a manual.

For a "stock" SS; 4-speed...

For a "Sports car"; 4-speed...

For drag racing, cruising, etc; Automatic...

My convert is a nice cruiser, with a 5-speed... BUT, if I build another hot rod, most likley it will be automatic...

Sticks are way more fun, but if you're drag raging most of the time, seems like an auto is the way to go.

My 72 automatic, is quicker, but
my 68 4 speed feels faster.

The stick car jumps, and keeps you involved.
The auto you just aim and gas it. Its easier, but less entertaining.

I have had several "three on the tree's" , I have had several 4 speeds ( 442, LS6 , 70 Chevelle with LT1, Dodge Challenger 4spd , 65 Chevelle 4spd, 1961 Brookwood 9 passenger station wagon 4spd. I have also had a host of automatics like my 1968 Hurst Olds for example.

All in all at 63yrs old I'll take an automatic.

Every damn hotrod I have owned has been an automatic, because I felt guilty that the mrs. wouldn't be able to drive it if she so desired; after all she's the reason I get to own the american nostalgia I have torn apart in the garage. I haven't driven it yet, but the 67 has MUNCIE all the way. The goats my father had growin up were mostly manuals, man what a ride. You gotta have manual if you're talkin american iron.

I know, I know...:p

The last stick car my parents had was a VW Rabbit in 1983, and I was only 13 then...all autos from there. I learned to drive on an auto, and would never even have considered buying a stick car. I also haven't had a lot of vehicles in the 19 years I've had my licence. An '85 Fiero, my '94 Ram P/U ( which I still have ), and 2 '69 Chevelles. All auto. Just the way it went, I guess.

I really hate automatics. Point and shoot is for cameras, not racing. I've heard the number 1 reason for an auto is because of manual breakage. Do they not make manual transmissions that handle high horsepower?

In a daily driver an automatic. But when I see someone with a new Corvette or a Mustang GT and it has an automatic I think why bother investing money in a sports car and be bored with an automatic. Performance cars and manual transmissions go hand in hand.

mines a daily driver so it has a 700r4 with a stage 2 shift kit

I want a manual car for a toy though, more fun but I couldn't put up with one all the time

Automatics don't have a clutch to wear out.

Small high-revving high-horsepower motor: you'll get a lot more out of it with a manual.

Big high-torque motor: you'll get more out of it with an automatic.

The unrestored vintage cars I've looked at buying always seemed to be in much better condition overall if they came with an automatic. I think people just treated those cars differently. So all my cars are automatics - by chance, not preference. But for relatively big American V8 cars, I like automatics in general.

A manual trans can make even a standard 283 - 307 car fun. It also makes the drive more fun. Autos are great but just to boring when it comes to spirited driving in the corners.

True. They have Clutches that wear out. Lots of them.

Drag racing a Stick car takes skill, its a skill that requires somebody not afraid to break transmissions, clutches, rear ends, axles or U-joints.

When I run my 68 (4 sp) at the track I granny off the line, for fear of a hefty tow truck bill the 50+ miles home, then try to shift as fast as my meager skills allow. I've only run the 72 (auto) at the track once right after getting it back together. It's the quickest fastest quarter mile ride I've ever had, but its almost boring. The 72 is almost a second and a half quicker and about 6 mph faster, but its not as fun, on the track or the street.

Stick cars all the way, even in my "corn-popper's"!!!

I love both!!

Tire frying torque that my 406 had and the high rpm, "shift her when I felt like it", old junk301!!

And now I expect more torque from my 496 BB!!!

But, I'm gonna make another 8,000+ rpm, 292/301 motor for grins!!

I love the feel of shifting gears, but with my knees? :clonk:
Am glad she's an auto now, yes the guy before me changed her - -
alas.....would not be able to drive her at all if she was still a 4sp.
But lordy I love to shift!!!

I have always had auto's but this time I am spending the money to put a manual in. Probably will find a cheap 3 speed to start out with and when I can afford to buy a 5 or 6 speed manual... I want to hammer the gears!

Well, over here most of the cars have stick shifts anyways, so does my daily driver (Alfa Romeo Sportwagon (http://eluxurycar.co.kr/newwork/image-download/car_page/alfa%20romeo/2002%20Alfa%20Romeo%20156%20Sportwagon%20GTA/156_sportwagon_gta_03.jpg)). An american made, fuel guzzeling, Baltimore steel V8 torque monster needs an automatic transmission. Period. I wouldn't want a stick in my Chevelle. I can drive stick shift here all day. Nothing cooler than the sound of a V8 and an auto when crusing through town. Not to mention the ease of "face lifting" your GF/wife in the passenger seat when flooring it from a stand. 0-60 mph in only a few secs without any interupting shifts! :D ;)
