: What Color To paint the '72
1partsguy Apr 26th, 06, 9:54 AM I have a '72 Malibu that I am painting and making a SS clone out of. I am chosing between 3 different color schemes. I am going to sell the car when finished. So help me out!!! Here are the colors. all will have Black interior. Red w/ Black stripes, Red w/ White stripes, or Bright Yellow w/ Black stripes
What do think is the best bet........?
dreis454 Apr 26th, 06, 10:03 AM Red w/Black stripes
CY72SS Apr 26th, 06, 10:14 AM I like blue with white stripes.

LNEEDFOURSPEED Apr 26th, 06, 10:32 AM I Like Different I Guess I Like Blue With Different Color Strips As You Will See If You Look At My Rpo Street Pictures On My Pro File
LNEEDFOURSPEED Apr 26th, 06, 10:34 AM But If To Choose From Your Colors You Have Id Go With Red With Black Strips

thunderstruck507 Apr 26th, 06, 11:47 AM If you do decide to go red, I'd go with something that really pops. Some kinda dark wine red candy color or something.
Otherwise find something else. Maybe white/black stripes?
But whatever you do I'd stay with basic stripes colors: white, black, or a pearl white or a metallic black
I'm not a fan of colored stripes at all
DaleM Apr 26th, 06, 12:30 PM Bright Yellow w/white stripes or a Candy Tangerine Orange w/white pearl stripes. Stand out from the crowd.
1966_L78 Apr 26th, 06, 12:38 PM Personally, I like the "Astro Blue" (not sure if thats the right name, factory medium blue) with white stripes, or Silver... The Tangerine with white pearl also sounds good...
BUT, IMO, if its a true "clone" (with all the emblems, etc) and you are selling, then I'd stick to something really close to a factory offered color... If going bright red, don't just put any red, get something really close to Cranberry Red... For a clone, maybe Hugger/Monaco Orange or Daytona Yellow...
With the black interior, I'd go with black stripes (although personally I don't like black stripes)...
Custom colors might lot cool to you, but they might also limit your market...
Derek69SS Apr 26th, 06, 12:45 PM For resale, red wins... to make it look best, white stripes will make it look "brighter" so it will stand out more than it would with black stripes... that, and it will look a little different from the rest of the plethora of red 70-72 chevelles.
1partsguy Apr 26th, 06, 1:07 PM It will be a Bench seat small block car. So I know that will hurt it some. But the small block should be a pretty solid runner
BIGSARGE Apr 26th, 06, 1:45 PM I'm partial to Elkhart Green with white stripes. :)
Toplischevelle Apr 26th, 06, 2:40 PM Just me but I like the cowl hood with out stripes so I don't have any. So I would paint what you like best and leave it at that.
Beaux Apr 26th, 06, 2:55 PM So I would paint what you like best and leave it at that.
Not the route to take for resale. You have to paint it what you think the majority of potential buyers like best. This often does not include the die hard collectors but the nostalgic "I want a muscle car cause I used to have one" crowd. Especially true given it will be a clone.
Jimmyhotrod Apr 26th, 06, 3:02 PM Just me but I like the cowl hood with out stripes so I don't have any. So I would paint what you like best and leave it at that.
I agree with toplis. I painted mine red w/ black strips, because everyone talked me into it. I really wanted Yellow w/ black strips, because I wanted it to stick out in the crowd.
My advice to you is....once it's done, you have to live with the decision for a while.
Do what you want.

NO he doesn't.....He plans on selling for profit if you read his post.
The-Butler-Did-It Apr 26th, 06, 3:17 PM A related question: I want to lay down stripes on my 68 Chevelle, can anyone give me the "common" Chevelle stripe width? Thanks.

I'll be lucky to probably break even---lol I hope to make a little money on the project but doing it mostly for fun and practice.
72Mark Apr 26th, 06, 3:38 PM Selling the car, I guess it's good to go with the "norm."
Me, I wanted to be a little different. As beautiful as red/black cars are, there are a lot of them.
I went with Green with white stripes and love it.

driver Apr 26th, 06, 3:43 PM Black with white stripes.
michael n mississippi Apr 26th, 06, 4:13 PM if you want it to bring more money? put a 71 grille and park lights on it. and to show off your perfect body work, Black with white stripes and black vynal top. i have had lots of offers and good feedback on the body and whats a better way to show off your bodylines? BLACK was and is my choice!
66 Malibu Man Apr 26th, 06, 4:15 PM There was a midnight bronze with white stripes that looked sharp back in 72, and there weren't alot of them like it. Just my opinion. You have to do what you want.
1partsguy Apr 26th, 06, 4:36 PM Doing good till you said to show off your "perfect" Body work----Good but not Perfect.
dreis454 Apr 26th, 06, 5:00 PM Doing good till you said to show off your "perfect" Body work----Good but not Perfect.
Paint it white then:D

Lately, I have seen several green 70-72 Chevelles (both light and dark green), and they are starting to grow on me...
I hope you at least put a domed hood on the car... Personally, I really dislike stripes on a flat hood car (then again, I'd prefer no stripes and the "domed" SS hood over stripes and/or the "cowl" hood)...
Body not so good, I would seriously consider White or light yellow (Daytona Yellow?)... Either that or spend some more practice time on the body before the paint...

Not that the Body work is bad every thing looks good except I am really fighting the body line on the pass. quarter panel. The previous owner put a half quarter on it and warped it bad. So instead of replacing it I have massaged 90% of it out but darn that body line is bad. Oh and it does have the Cowl Hood on it
RedSS454 Apr 26th, 06, 5:51 PM I'm a little partial to Red with black stripes. :D There is nothing better looking on a Chevelle, IMO Viper Red is definatley a bright, vibrant red. But, the problem is that it is expensive, so you may not want to go that route. But, it still should be red. ;)
Chris
1partsguy Apr 26th, 06, 5:53 PM Price Single Stage Red with hardner and reducer will cost me $315.00
driver Apr 26th, 06, 6:16 PM Body not so good? Paint it white. That's one reason I myself would NEVER buy a white car.Got burnt on a white car once.
Alwhite00 Apr 26th, 06, 7:21 PM I also like yellow with white stripes, Bright but still a stock look. I don't like yellow with the black as it looks like a bumble bee.
LK
Luis Apr 26th, 06, 8:38 PM Triple black, stripe delete.
BillsCamino Apr 26th, 06, 8:47 PM My '72 is #24, Ascot Blue...see pic.
michael n mississippi Apr 26th, 06, 9:09 PM my 70 came from the big plant as a white with black stripes and black vinyl top. the remarks posted above is why i chose black! white looks very clean and good to me but people thinks your hiding bad panels. and if your body lines are not right, why not get it right before you spend the money on paint? that alone will bring you more money than any color you choose.i would be scared to buy your car already. good luck with your decision.
Nicky64Chevy Apr 26th, 06, 10:08 PM Yellow with no stripes.
Motorhead62 Apr 27th, 06, 12:31 AM I dig yellow and so I voted for the yellow with black stripes. But I do like darker blue w/white stripes and I like hugger orange w/ white or black stripes.
1partsguy Apr 27th, 06, 1:23 PM The good thing is after a few hours of metal work and very little filler I have the quarter panel looking really good. Now several hours of block sanding the whole car to get it nice and straight.........Then I am going to have to make a decision on the paint. I have noticed the majority of votes for Red w/black in a week or so I should have my mind made up. Thanks for all the Ideas and Pics keep em coming

bukweet Apr 27th, 06, 7:47 PM My 72 El Camino was Spring Green (code 26 I think) and white. Would look good Green with white stripes.
If you're just doin' it, why not silver with charcoal stripes?
Ontario Orange with black stripes (My 71 SS was so adorned by the factory) Wish I had that one back. Last heard, the guy I sold it to went to jail in Louisiana in 73. Hasn't been seen since.
frankf72malibu Apr 27th, 06, 7:53 PM Bright Yellow w/white stripes
I agree but go for the black stripes. Not that I am partial or anything:D .

1partsguy Apr 29th, 06, 12:14 PM Well I know i will probably get some slack from this but I ordered paint for the car today. Between My brother,a good friend and I we all deceided to go with Viper Yellow w/ Storm grey stripes. Will be different but hey if it doesn't sell I'll still have a nice car to drive around.

No slack. That should be a nice combination. Post a pic when she is done.

depley Apr 29th, 06, 3:43 PM with the black interior and for resale why not a color combo that is a bit less seen than red and black.
How about silver with black stripes.
or Black with white stripes

Be glad too, I am getting excited about spraying the paint. I just hope it looks as good as I think it will.
79943 Apr 29th, 06, 9:17 PM fathom blue with white stripes or mulsanne blue.....awesome on a chevelle or camino in my book....ooops too late. well post some pics with the viper yellow. we promise we wont gripe.
Beaux May 3rd, 06, 11:01 AM with the black interior and for resale why not a color combo that is a bit less seen than red and black.

Honestly, everybody that moves away from red seems to go with silver. Cortez on black will, one day, BE the new cranberry on black.
Locally I see more silver / black and black / white chevelles than I do red anymore.
Im honestly thinking of reshooting my 70 red / black and waiting it out as sooner or later I will be in the minority and hear the old "Ahhh, I remember that color combo!" statements. :D
I dont actually see that many red / black anymore other than in old advertisements from GM and covers of mags like Jegs and such. Nowdays its no more over done (just local stuff I see, might be different in your area) than the other color combos mentioned above and hugger orange on black.
People are trying so hard to move away from red that red / black will one day be cool again. ;)
