OK I'm thinking of painting the bumpers on my car. I have the old front bumper (crome flaking and some rust) and my back one is in decent condition. I have a place near by that does chemical stripping. Will this strip the crome off?? Also, should I use a etching primer before painting??? I want to do them is a silver color. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Or would I be better off going to a glass bumper and painting them. Any advice would be great!!
Thanks,
John

My experience with chemical stripping is that it will not remove the chrome. Chrome removal could be done by a plating shop.

Thanks for the quick reply. Would you recommend sand blasting?? Would that give a good surface for paint to stick too???

Paint will stick to the bare metal if you prep it properly, and it will stick to the chrome as well. Meaning: you don't have to remove the chrome. You could peel off as much as you can, then DA sand the entire bumper with 180 grit. Treat the bare steel then prime the entire bumper with a good urethane primer surfacer. If you have low spots where the chrome was removed, fill with Evercoat filler. Sand smooth to create a uniform surface and re-prime. Final sand with 400 wet paper and spray the color.

Question..
Why do you want to paint the bumpers??
Do you like the way it looks??
Why don't you just rechrome it??
I presonally don't like the painted bumpers.. But If you do. It's your car.

Thanks for the help gentlemen!
Shai....I'm thinking of going with a new look. It's winter time and I bored...LOL. I just think my car needs something to make it stand out. I do show it a lot and it's tough when you have a half dozen or more chevelles in your class. I already have a new crome bumper on the front. And if I don't like the way it looks, I was going to replace the rear anyway. Plus I want to replace the wheels, and put some gauges in the dash. It's never done!!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Alright.
But personally I really don't like it.
I mean.. You have a beautiful car!
I like the Silver stripes on the black paint, it looks awsome.
If you have 2 other bumper to replace it with, go ahead and do it.. You'll see I was right. If i was a judge on a show.. You would win in my book!
I think your car is extremely nice!
