I finanly got some time in driving my 66 with the 489 with the new roller cam. Wow she has really been woke up. Pulls to 6k nice and quick. Now I'm thinking I need a better exhaust (2 1/2" Flowmaster), bigger fuel line (3/8 now, need 1/2"?), and a better carb (870 Street Avenger) maybe a 950 HP.
I will take it to the track soon but the stiff suspension and street tires may see their limits.
Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for input here or there.

Make those changes and stick some tires on it before you head out to the track.

I will probably run it as is for now. I don't have the cash flow to make the changes.
What would be the most important or first change? I think I'll keep the carb I like the fact it has a choke for driving in IL.
A friend said tires would be the first thing what do you think?

It is hard to describe that added power a roller gives you. Glad it worked out for you.
PS - the 870 should be more than enough carb. Once you get a 3" exhaust in there, you can tune that carb for even more power. I would bet you have a good 40+ HP ready to unleash yet.

What cam are you running? I'm in the brain storming portion of a 496 build

A Cammotion ground on 112, 240/249, .618/.630. VEry close to one UD Harold had recommended. The Cammotion folks also recommended it after I filled out their on-line info about my car.

rob,
sounds like a fun ride. i wouldn't worry too much about the choke unless your driving it in the winter months. my 1000hp is a little cold blooded but starts without a problem. i'm getting ready update to 3" exhaust myself. i'm a little torn on whether to go with a x or h-pipe. which way are you going?
i talked with the people at torque tech the other day. looks like a nice product but is a little pricey. $292.00 to my door just for the x-set up to the mufflers. it consists of 3 1/2" head pipes before the x, and 3" from the x to the mufflers. they said to keep the front pipes the same size as the collectors then go to 3" after the x.
i am also considering buying the 3" flowmaster kit without mufflers. summit sells the kit for $200.00. it comes with an h-pipe and tails that exit behind the rear tires but not all the way to the bumper like my 2 1/2" amer. thunder system.(clamps and hangers not included)
keep us updated on what you decide on the exhaust. i will be doing this in the next week or so.(as soon as i make up my mind on which way to go)
good luck,
mike

I have been looking at 3" from Jegs their brand and an H pipe kit.
As well as Pypes and the 3" Flowmaster exhaust pipes. Any one use Warlock mufflers the ones you can uncork at the muffler?
A 950 HP I think would be perfect.
