Believe it or not, it takes more work than you might think to get a proper "flat" custom firewall main section.

There are some compound shapes hidden in what appears to be a mostly flat firewall. Its not flat, that is for sure. If you carefully check out the cowl seam line (runs mostly a few inches from the top with a curving path from one side to the other) it is usually in two or more planes.

Just make a pattern out of fiberboard or whatever. Then carefully make your custom firewall off the pattern. Then attatch your custom panel with sheetmetal bonding material (glue).

This may be what you are looking for:Give J&b microfinish a call at 815-842-2279,they are in Pontiac Il.They can make pretty close to anything you need, they also have a website under same name.We here in IL.and a ton of people that show cars around here buy many products from this company,he does outstanding work! A freind of mine purchaced a firewall cover from him for his 1966 elcamino and it looks great, billet aluminum, but they are expensive to build,I beleive his was around $1000.00,one downfall is they take alot of upkeep, stainless steel would be much easier to clean, give em a call!

I've recently "smoothed" my firewall on my 64. Like Bomber67 suggested. I made a cardboard template. Then transfered them to a sheetmetal piece. Then I welded the sheetmetal to the firewall. Duraglassed the seams and finished with filer and primed. I still need to finish sanding before I paint it. the reason I did this was I removed the heater core and windshield wiper motor. so I had very large holes to fill in.

Thanks What was your final decision on this post? Did you finish the firewall project, or just stick with yours?

Catch you later.
