A quick question...I'm working on a '71 Malibu on which I need to replace the trunk extension panels. My quarters are in good condition (having been replaced by the previous owner) but the trunk is rotten. My question: Has anyone replaced the trunk extensions without removing the quarters? I need to remove the trunk pan anyway, could I replace from them from the inside with the trunk pan out?

Thanks,
Jeff

It can be done just harder with the quarters in place. The hard spots will be where the exts are sandwiched between the truck floor and inner wheel well, but since you are replacing the floor that spot should be no problem. Also the other spot will be where the ext folds up under the rear bumper mount panel. You will need to remove those spot welds in order to remove the old ext and slide the new one up in its place.

Just some tips to help you on the swap, mark the location of the old ext. trace its outline on the inner wheel well and that rear bumper mount panel. Doing so will speed up the swap and lessen some of the headaches. Check the fit of the ext to every part first before you weld it in. Use sheet metal screw to hold it in place while you install the new trunk floor. Get the trunk floor to fit to the exts and once it fits to your liken then weld it.

If your ext are rusted along with your floor I would highly suggest you look and see if your rear bumper mount panel is rusted too, those seem to always rust, and swaping that out is not a trick deal...Eric
