: Paintjob Poll: Give me some paint ideas for my 70 chevelle
Jason Oct 2nd, 03, 10:38 PM My bodywork is on order and now comes the waiting for it to get here. My father asks me the million dollar question "What color or scheme are you going to paint it?". I had not given it any thought til he said something and my mind is a blank. Everyone up here in Alaska has black with white stripes or red with black stripes. I want something, ANYTHING different than the usual and this is where i need your help guys.
Tell me all your ideas for a paint scheme, colors or better yet, post some pics of your ideas or anyone elses for that matter. My car is a full frame off resto and needs your help. CHIME IN AND LET ME KNOW HOW I SHOULD PAINT MY CAR!
crowenate Oct 2nd, 03, 11:08 PM I'll tell you what i ended up doing,at first i wanted to paint my 69 french blue mettalic, but at every show or cruise in i go to,more cars are similar to that color tha black and red almost so i wanted to be alittle different and i wen to my local paint store and spent about a month going in there a couple times a week spending acouple hours each time looking at different colors,i'm just lucky they are the best peopl you could meet. But the helped me out telling me what colors are hard to match if i ever need to,and different things like that.So after all that time i finally went with black saphire mettalic, its a mix between black, purple, and red pearl, and i havent seen another one like it yet,(cros my fingers that i dont)But what i suggest is look at the different color chips and make sure before you pick one its what you want,i ended up with a pint of the french blue met. to paint my engine compartment with, and ended up changing my mind.So just paint it what you want it to be and not what eveybody else wants, suggestions are good though it can get you in the right track. You have to live with it so paint it what you like. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
sevt_chevelle Oct 2nd, 03, 11:12 PM What ever you do DONT DO it in a custom chrome pearl yellow. Then it would look like mine someday when I get it done
But my advice is its YOUR CAR YOU pick the color. Stay away from RED its SO BORING graemlins/boring.gif
As in HOW, I see it only two ways. Single stage urethane or baseclear. SS if you plan on going with a solid non metallic color, baseclear if metallic. Even thou am doing mine a PEARL yellow am shooting the yellow in SS, waiting 24hrs block level with 1200 grit then appling the pearl coats and clear coats.
The reason am doing it that way and same way I would go with SS on a solid color is because a SS paint job is MUCH DEEPER then a baseclear job. You take a black SS and black baseclear sitting next to each other Ill tell you which is which. Why that is because basecoats are pretty much nothing but color binders, flop adjusters, converters. Were SS paint doesnt so you get MORE color pigment in that same gallon making it LOOK DEEPER. Ive been looking into relocating down to Kansas City, anyway I talked too a few shops and even got a tour of a few places, but 3 dealerships down there all spray with NOTHING BUT SS expect for the real heavy metallics. The reason cause the depth of the paint is so greater. But the dealerships were jaguar, BMW all high dollar places
Nothing and I mean nothing will look better then a SS paint job with cleared applied over it, because the clear adds even more depth. But thats just me, a baseclear job and even just a SS with no clear are the only ways to go PERIOD
Crowenate is right. But, just as a suggestion, (I've only seen this once and it looked sharp) do the stripes in pearl. I believe that they were referred to as "Ghost Stripes". With the pearl, the stripes are subtle enough that they don't "hit you in the face" but you know that they are there, and with a good paint job, they look good. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
John Himself Oct 3rd, 03, 1:20 AM i think it looks great with red and black stripes, but ya, EVERYBODY does it that color. if it were mine, maybe dark green with white stripes
67Elco400 Oct 3rd, 03, 3:44 AM You should do a metallic blue with silver stripes.
beautiful IMHO
marinablue67 Oct 3rd, 03, 7:13 AM white with red stripes

Hugger Orange with white stripes graemlins/thumbsup.gif

You said you're finiishing a frame off. Have you been doing it to make it "correct", or are you open to anything? If it's correct so far, I'd argue for a factory color combo of your chosing.
My '70 is a Fathom Blue Metallic (code 28) with a white rag top, white stripes and a pearl interior. I think it looks great! Never fails to get attention no matter where I go!! I've seen very few fathom blue cars here, anyway, and as Eric pointed out - everyone has red!
Another really nice, reasonably rare factory color is Black Cherry (code 78). With white stripes and a white or black interior, I think it would look outstanding!!
I really like the contrast of a darker exterior color with the white stripes!!
If you're not hung up on originality, the sky's the limit, I guess, but there's something about having these cars done up the way they were that really primes my pump - but then again, I'm old enough to remember all these cars when they were new!! :(
Good luck with whatever you decide!
Andy
RacnJsn95 Oct 3rd, 03, 7:29 AM I was thinking of painting my 71 blue with blue stripes (both metallic). The stripe color would be slightly lighter than the body.

Thats just an example I drew, I think it would look pretty good in actual paint. Maybe the stripes should be a little darker though. Or maybe a White on white scheme, pearl of course.
Black Cherry as Andy said, with white stripes. It looks awesome. It's a deep burgundy which is a shade of red, but red does look good after all. It's also an original '70 color wich counts for a lot IMO.
blumont Oct 3rd, 03, 11:03 AM How about a pearl white with red stripes

67shovel Oct 3rd, 03, 1:51 PM I'm with LS-5.........original. There are countless options for the colors and stripe on a car........but only one is correct. To boil all your options down to just one, the correct one, is easy........the factory color.
If it's stock it appeals to most of the people.
To do it custom will appeal to you (hopefully), but everybody else will have wished you did it different because there are countless options & opinions. When it comes time to sell your car that custom job is probably going to hurt you where as a stock color is more desirable.
This is my 45 year old opinion.
Hot66ss Oct 3rd, 03, 3:40 PM My 70 Camino will be off to the body shop soon and will be Hugger Orange with white stripes with a hint of pearl. I think it will look bitchin
My el Camino is being sprayed today graemlins/hurray.gif
PPG Toner Orange. No pearl or metallics, haven't decided on stripes or not.
Jason Oct 4th, 03, 6:30 AM Well ive decided...and the winner is (drum roll)....cortez silver with black stripes! What finally got me to choose that combo was when i grabbed my father's Original Parts Group catalog and BAM! the chevelle on the front looks like it was ready to jump off the page and run you over while you sat in your recliner. The color looks terrific and gives the feel of, i dont know, class?!? to the car. It looks like a combo that i think would be attractive to not only the guys who bought the car off the showroom floor but the young guys as well who would get a job in junior high so they can buy one. Flat out, i think it looks great! Thanks for all the ideas guys! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Grover Oct 4th, 03, 7:55 AM Jason,
I was close, I was going to say Nevada Silver. Someone posted a picture on this site a month or so ago of a 70 (I think) Nevada Silver car... what a knock out. I'll send you a copy later today, after work.

red2rider Oct 4th, 03, 11:43 PM If you like silver go to my website and check out my 70
It's 2000 cadillac moonstone metallic. Just a hint darker than cortez silve but the flakes are awesome.

baddbob71 Oct 7th, 03, 11:04 PM silver is nice, look how it shows off the lines on this 32 I painted- Performance]Performance A B (http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=75131243&photoID=75132669&security=jlNTkI) I also agree with the solid color single stage paint is deeper looking theory, especially if you use a single stage that has a compatible clear (same hardeners) apply two coats of single stage color then two more with a 50% mix of clear and you'll be surprised at how deep and wet it will look. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Factory Champagne Gold w/Black Stripes
2nd choice would be Cortez Silver w/Blk Stripes or Hugger Orange w/White stripes.

Midnight Marauder Oct 8th, 03, 4:07 PM I have said it before and I will say it again - Silver is going to be the cranberry red of the future. Mark my words. It will end up being the prevalent color and will be what you see on the road all the time. I have already begun to notice the trend. I agree though, its a cool color scheme but becoming more common every day.
NITRO Oct 8th, 03, 4:08 PM Jason, my friend Bob owns the car on the cover of OPG. I will tell him that it has inspired you, it is really a great looking ride!

There is a dark silver / grey color on the 02 and 03 dodge rams that is awesome, IMO. I do not know the code but the color rocks. I am going to paint my 70SS in that color and go stripe delete. If I add stripes later, they will be white to offset the dark colors as my interior is black. Everytime I am on the road I am looking at colors but generally not on muscle cars. I am looking for the same color tones as original paint but usually "one off" shades or something just a hair different.
Charcoal on black looks good, IMO. but the darker the gray the more noticeable the scratches, swirl marks, dirt, and wear show. Just something to consider I guess. But I like the scheme.

beautiful IMHO Cortez Silver w/ dark metallic blue stripes..............awesome :D
loosend Oct 22nd, 03, 3:19 PM I have the red with black stripes setup but I would do the Forest Green with black stripes if I were to paint it again. You don't see that one too much and the green looked like a metallic color and wasn't too dark. Green is not one of my favorite colors but it looks pretty sharp.
knownothing Oct 23rd, 03, 10:40 AM Not many people even mention green which is a huge reason why I painted mine grabber green metallic with pearl white strips. The pearl doesnt show up great in pics but under the parking lot lights of a cruise night or the sun at a car show watch out man cause it's cool. The sig has some pics of the car with old wheels and tires so i guess i'll update it today.
OHhhhh check the sig for pics of the color.
