Hey all,

car will not start without hotwiring the ignition terminal on the HEI.
I checked voltages on the fuse box and with the key on ignition, I am not getting 12V on the ignition terminal, where amongst other things, the HEI is hooked up.

What should i look at first? Any hints?

Thanks!

I have an HEI in my 70 454 driver, I found a hot wire in the fuse box by your left foot that is 12v on CRANK and RUN. And ran a wire to the dist. Was your car running and quit or are you hooking up? Bob aces 2825

I think I would check the ignition switch first.

Having same problem its the ignition switch. Mine cranks then dies sec you let go of key but if you run the wire from terminal to dist it cranks fine. Shop said its the ignition switch

Do yours still have the old points distributor Blair?

Could be a bad ignition switch but it sounds like it's starting off of the bypass circuit and the resistive wire from the bulkhead connector to the coil's + terminal is bad.

Hm, would the batt idiot light light up if it is the ignition switch? The batt idiot light comes on when i turn the key to ignition position.

Do the turn signals/heater work? If not, I would check the fuse first. Should be the turn signal/heater fuse, which is right next to the IGN terminal. Anything connected to that terminal is protected by that fuse. With a meter or test light, check both sides of the fuse clip holders. If one side has power and the other doesn't its the fuse. If both sides don't have power, then it would probably be the IGN switch, although if it was, there would be other things not working either, radio, wipers, ect...

Greg, you da man. I tried the turn signals and they wouldn't work either, you were correct. After that i measured the fuse and it was bad. I didn't know the heater and turn signal fuse secures the ign terminal.
Easy fix! Thank you! :beers:

I learned something too.
I didn't know that terminal was powered off the turn signal/heater fuse.

All 4 of the terminals for extra stuff are protected by fuses, and it is a fuse right next to the terminal. The ACC terminal is protected by the radio fuse, the BAT terminal is protected by the cig lighter/ctsy fuse, the LPS terminal is protected by the instrument lamps fuse.
