: Rolling the lips of rear fenders for tire clearance

Has anyone out there done this to gain another inch or so of clearance? One of my neighborhood 'experts' suggests using a baseball bat and let it 'roll' with the tire while the car is pulled forward slowly. He claims it works well. Anyone else have any tried and true methods? I'm looking at putting on P295/50R15 fatties on my '66 and really don't want the sidewalls cut up or my fenderwells butched up.

Don't know if it works or not. How stupid are you gonna feel if it bows your quarter panel out? Are ya feeling lucky?

Pretty much that's why I posted it here....to benefit from someone else's experience. Sure would hate to stretch a quarter panel.

Before I replace the panels, I'm going to stick the biggest rear tires on it that will fit. I'll then proceed to do 'em in with the 427 Rat on a stick dipped in NOS. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Hey Jon_ : I just noticed that you are in Orange,Ca. Have you lived there long? Do you ever remember seeing this car in the pic. running around there? I bought it from there last October. I don't think it had many owners and am trying to trace it back. It was a drag car for many years, and has been off the streets for quite some time. Thanks for any info.

what ever way you do it your going to have problems with the paint cracking and worse yet body filler cracking.dont use your ballbat either your only asking for trouble.if you really want that size tire on you could grind the wheelwell lip from the insideto thin it up,it will look neater than a bent up lip.if you go with grinding dont stay in one place to long the heat will cause the paint to bubble, then paint or rustproof bare metal when done.i think a thin lip will look better than one beat up with your ballbat.

I don't have to worry about cracking the paint...the car is in primer right now and i'm just starting the restification of it. I don't know if I made myself clear or not earlier, but the 'ball bat' suggestion was given to 'roll' the lipp outward nice and even, not beat it out. Maybe i'll just throttle back a little on the tire size to P275/50s.....those P295's look bitchin tho. I'll bet they would fit on a 15x10 wheel with a 5" backspace. Anyhow, I'm certainly not looking for a 'flared fender' look for this car, just something to smooth the inner lip. I may end up grinding it off and welding in a flat panel to tie the inner fender together. Thanks for the input.

My 64 is in the body shop now. One of the things that I'm having done is cutting off the metal beyond the weld. This is the part that normally gets rolled up. Only an experienced eye will see that it has been removed and I will gain close to 1/2" in tire clearance.

Thanks for the input....I think that's the direction i'm headed. The body is coming off the frame next month, it'll be a good opportunity to get my die grinder in there with a cutoff wheel and go to town....I think that combined with a 5" offset wheel will get me where I need to be for P295/50R15 rear tires. Thanks again.

You can fit those tires on you car. Do a search on the rolled fender lip becaus I know I posted a very long, detailed post about it once.

also if your using wheel opening mouldings you will have to thin them out also, and if you go back to smaller tires you could install new wheel opening mouldings that havent been thinned and it will look like you never touched it.
