OK, I'll try this again if you don't mind. My 66 SS Clone (350 / 325 crate engine I am told) failed inspection for emissions. Yes New Jersey has emission testing on 40 year old cars amoung other stupid regulations and taxes. Anyway I tried setting the timing and the "mark was no where to be found (tho I later found it almost 180* on the other side). Had the light on #1 and vacuum disconnected plugged with a golf tee. As a joke I attached it to #2 and the mark was at least in site.

The car runs and starts fine just failed emissions. I was told maybe the balancer "shifted" ....this much? It has a HEI distributor ( I stopped working on cars 15 years ago) and have no experience with these.

Any and ALL ideas are welcome...thanks to everyone in advance...jeff

The outer ring of the balancer is seperated from the inner piece thats bolted to your crank, by a thin piece of rubber, these two pieces can often slip. Look closley at the paint on the face of the ballancer to see if its cracked, or you can tell in any way that the paint crack is irregular, just one way to tell if its slipped...
