: Inop brake light
Xplantdad Apr 19th, 06, 7:52 PM Okay...I tried searching for info but I must not be using the correct "key" words...1966 SS 396 Chevelle which has a new rear harness installed.
Anyways, I noticed last Saturday night that my left brake light doesn't work when the brakes are applied (the tail light comes on with the lights) but the right brake light does work. I would assume that this might be a ground issue, but since I'm completely in the dark (no pun intended) when it comes to electrical...where's the best place for me to look?
Again..when the brakes are applied...left doesn't work...right one does...HELP!
Thanks,
Bruce
John D Apr 19th, 06, 8:21 PM Does the Left Rear turn signal work?
Xplantdad May 1st, 06, 12:19 AM Yes, the left turn signal works, but slowly...sorry it took so long to post back...been busy. Any help appreciated!

John D May 1st, 06, 10:18 PM Ok. Reason for the question is if the Turn Signal works, it rules out a possible problem in the turn signal switch (in the column).
I'll assume it is a direct factory copy/replacement harness - not a custom or home-made job?
Yes, it sounds (or better looks... its a light) like a grounding problem. Couple of things to do/check:
From inside the trunk, pull out & put back the turn/stop bulb socket several times. The bulb gets its ground via the "gripper-fingers" on the socket housing. Doing this may clean off any paint or corrosion that'd prevent a good metal to metal connection.
Also from inside the trunk, give the 5 tinnerman nuts that hold the fender extension/taillight housing to the body a slight tweak or tightening. NOT TOO MUCH - just an 1/8 turn or less. Again, this will "bite" the nuts into the body and promote a good connection.
Xplantdad May 1st, 06, 11:07 PM John...I appreciate the response. I have to go to Las Vegas to run our Supercross Parties...so I won't be around the car until next week :(
I'll let you know what I find. BTW...it's a factory type replacement harness :)

Elree Colby May 2nd, 06, 10:21 PM The problem may still be with the signal switch. The signal switch opens the connection between the brake light switch and the rear brake lights. If that connection is not made when the turn signal switch is in the center or off position, the brake light will not work. One brake light works so brake light switch and power are OK. The left turn signal light works, slow but does work, so the connection from the turn signal switch to the light is OK. That leaves the signal switch.
To test the brake/turn signal lights. Disconnect the signal switch, the half moon shaped connector at the steering column. Jumper power from the BAT connection of the fuse block as follows. Power to the yellow wire should light the left rear brake/signal light. Power to the dkgreen wire should light the right rear turn signal/brake light. Power to the two, two wires one slot, lt blue wires should light the left front turn signal light and the cluster signal light. Power to the two dk blue wires should light the right front turn signal and the cluster signal light. The power jumper wire should have an in-line fuse in case it finds a good ground.
Xplantdad Oct 3rd, 06, 7:27 PM It turned out to be a faulty bulb...LOL
Always start with the easiest thing first, huh?

I don't see how that could be possible.
IF the turn signal worked, the bulb had to be good.
Xplantdad Oct 3rd, 06, 10:08 PM That and I fooled around with the ground for the left brake light. I'm just happy that it works now, Dean :)
Though...I'm wondering if maybe the problem that I'm having with my turn signal cancelling cam/turn signal lever may also be part of what's going on (after I reread what Elree said above:( ) it's working okay now
See my other post in this section for an explanation of that problem! LOL :(
Burbank SS Oct 4th, 06, 12:24 AM Its a two filliment bulb, so if one filiment is broken, it can short across the other filiment and work for some things and not others. Gotta love those 1157s and friction ground tab sockets. A broken filiment and some corrosion and anything can happen back there.
