Thanks to everyone for the help with my gauge conversion, it all appears to function properly!

My dash is mostly in, and I am playing around with a couple last things.

When I got into this, the old cigarette lighter I removed from the car was a Casco type, and it had a 1971 date. The wrong cigarette lighter knob and element was in the car, but it all worked ok. I had a correct repro lighter, but found it would not fit in the Casco socket since the repro 69 lighter element was too large.

I wound up getting the correct Rochester type parts (housing and socket), so I believe I have the correct type lighter for 69 now.

The last difference I see is that the assembly manual shows a special ground ring that is supposed to go around the lighter socket, appears to be trapped up to the back of the dash by tightening the housing to the lighter socket. The ground wire then leaves this special ring and goes up to the 3rd terminal on the fuel gauge (ground) on my gauge cluster.

The old Casco lighter just had a simple stay-con type push on ground terminal. This special cigarette lighter ground ring is nowhere to be found.

Has anyone run into this before, and where can I get this special ground ring/wire or do I have to make something up? It looks like I could either strip a wire and twist it up, then shrink wrap it so that it forms a bare wire ring, then trap that between the outer housing and lighter socket to make a ground..but I would prefer to make it more like the factory did so I know its right and safe.

I figure that if I bought a new harness that ground ring would be there for the lighter. I searched some stores with no luck finding anything like it.

Also, on the same topic..are you able to use a cell phone charger in these Rochester type lighter sockets? or is some type of adapter needed? I stuck my phone charger in temporarily, and it did not work..I dont smoke! Mainly need the connection as a power point for my phone when I have the car out.

problem solved..I got in touch with american autowire, and they agreed to hook me up with what I needed (for a ridiculously LOW sum $ as well!!!).

on top of that, the ring/wire will be ready for me tomorrow AND this place is only about 20 minutes from me! i feel like I hit the lottery or something.

two thumbs up for this place:
