I have my 66 down to bare metal with most of the body work done.
I dont want to paint yet as I dont have a suitable place to store it & fearful of scratches/dings.
Can I have it primered or do it myself to keep it from rusting?(will the primer seal it?)
What kind of primer should one use?
Can you use spoting putty on top of primer?
Thanks guys! smile.gif
Do yourself a favor and spend the money to etch prime, followed by a couple coats of 2k primer. Check the tech sheets for application procedures. It will be fine to store it then. And yes on the spot putty.

Etch prime it. A quart of PPG DX1791 and quart of Dx1792 reducer will run you somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-90 bucks. It mixes 1:1 so you will have 2qts of product, that will be enough to apply the needed coats of etch to the car.
Once you apply the etch(1 coat) then follow that up with 2coats of epoxy primer. The epoxy is the least porous of all primers. Primer surfacer can absorb moisture if left in that kind of environment.
Body filler can ONLY BE applied over epoxy primer, it can NOT be applied over primer surfacer. A poly glaze can be applied over primer surfacer but should be used only to fix minor imperfections not BAD BODY WORK. A spot putty like you mentioned is NOTHING BUT JUNK, and should not even be consided to be used on a car. Very well known for shrinkage. Basically SPOT PUTTY is nothing but a thick version of LACQUER PRIMER.
A few examples of poly glaze would be evercoat's metal glaze or Upol's dolhpin glaze. Just keep in mind ONLY POLY GLAZE can be applied over sanded primer surfacer NOT regular body filler. But regular filler can be applied over epoxy primer...Eric
