Hey guys, does the Nylon bushing for the oil put go on before you install the oil pump? Or should the bushing and rod fall into place from the distributor hole?

The reason I ask is because a friend and I were putting together my 454 and the nylon bushing does not fit thru the hole on top. So we have to remove the oil pan and try to install it then. Is this the right procedure?

The nylon bushing has to be installed prior to bolting the pump on the block so yourself a favor and buy a shaft with a steel sleeve on it. IS77E

Truthfully...I would not use the type of oil pump drive shaft with the plastic coupler. The aftermarket (ARP type) drive shaft with the pinned attached steel sleeve is priced very reasonable and is obviously more durable.

FWIW, the after market shafts with the steel sleeve will not fit
through the hole in the block either. They have to be put in and then
the pump installed. Ask me how I know.

Yes I have the one with the steel sleeve also. Well it looks like I have to drop the oil pan and install this. Two steps forward, one step back...oh well!

Been there,
and just like you,
I won't do that again. ;)

That sucks! Now I'm second guessing my pump shaft. Can I check the stability of the shaft? The disrtibutor is out now and getting ready to prime it.

If its already assembled and in the car go ahead and run with it. Every HP chev engine whether BBC or SBC came with a nylon bushing. Chevy knows well and truly what works.

Like the 78 350 diesel?

It serves two purposes;
1: Keeps the shaft centered, and
2: Keeps the shaft from coming out with the distributer. This is why the bushing will not pass thru the hole in the main cap so yes, pans gotta come off.
