As you can see by the original post, I am just afraid to ruin my motor. WHat are the tell tale signs of too much oil. Is it frothy oil on dipstick? or is it something else.
Thanks for the help

Hate to sound stupid, but I changed the oil in my 396 (first time since I bought the car a few months back) and ended up adding at least 6quarts of oil to have it show full on the dipstick. I used a smaller size AC delco filter. The oil pan looks larger than stock, and I just wanted to make sure that this wasn't too bizzar. I would hate to ruin the motor before the summer season begins here in Wisconsin.

Thanks

Don't think you need to worry too much with 6 US quarts in the pan. Think that is about 5 Canadian quarts (we use litres now!). Anyway I would use the standard longer filter.

Back in the old days we used to put 4 in the pan and 1 in the filter so what you got sounds about right.

If you are still concerned try to identify your pan as a gm original or equivalent and what the "rated" capacity is. Is the dip stick and original ?

Don't think the signs you are explaining have anything to do with the oil level, probably more a reflection of a "mature" older engine.

dhovy, when i put a new gm oil pan and dipstick on my 69 396 it too took 6qts to fill it with std short filter which i knew funky.

I had checkd the new gm pan aganst my original stock one before instaqlling it ans it was exactlythe same so i know it was not that.

so i pulled the new dipstick tube and dipstick out of the new pan and re-installed the old original dipstick and all was back to normal. The new dipstick and tube are a different length than the stock 1969 tube 7 stick were and that was the problem so check that out if you have a known good stock 30 yr old tube and stick to try.
