: fiberglassing the cowl area?

Well my car is in the shop getting an 8pt. cage installed and I am not going to run a heater core nor am i going to run a windshield wiper set up. I'm going to have all of the holes in the cowl area welded shut and then the shop suggested I have them lay a layer of glass on top of everything and have it painted to a color of choice. Now this would look pretty smooth and give it an over the top look, but would it be worth it? The shop has dealt with glass quite a few times and they do good work, but will it hold up to the hustle and bustle of a big block? Thanks for any comments in advance-

I am totally lost as to where exactly they want to "lay some fiberglass". Are we talking about on the bottom of the "well" under the removable cowl top? Why would they want to do that? Weld up any holes, finish them off with plastic filler and prime it just like any other area. What would be the reason for the fiberglass?

As a rule, fiberglass applied to metal is a looser. They have totally different expansion rates and it is a failure waiting to happen.

Is this going to be a race car only? In California at least you MUST have "self actuating" windshield wipers on every street driven car.

The fiberglass would be applied to the firewall area on the engine side. I myself have been giving it second and third thoughts. It would be a nice thing to have, but I dont think it'd last. If it was something that was acheiveable; i'd think more people would be doing it. Most people use a thin layer of sheetmetal or aluminum to make the area look clean, with glass you can contour it in any which way, paint it so on and so forth. The windshield wipers are going to be put back on, but for right now i have the wiper motor off. I'm going to figure all of those little things out later, as im still getting the car all together to be driven here in a month or so.
