I am going to be installing new GM fenders on my chevelle in the next week or so. I am just putting it back together for now, just finished engine and frontend rebuild. I don't have any paint gun experience. So what is your guys recomendation leave in the factory black finish or rattle can prime them?

The car is garaged and I will try to avoid weather but it could get wet, but never snow. It could be awhile before it gets to be painted, I am seriously out of car money, I went way over budget on the motor.

Thanks

If you do think rattle can primer is OK, is any brand better than others.

mr2fast4u, if you have an original GM part don't touch it with anything. That black primer is called "E" coat and is electostacticly applied and is zinc rich like galvanizing. Rattle can primer on the other hand is JUNK, need I say more?

I have seen where the "E" coat rusts on some thin areas. But this is where the car is outside everyday rain or shine and is unpainted for a year or more. I would say you will be safe.

Iam with Martinsr, leave it on there. That e-coat is about the best rust inhibtor out there. When it comes times to paint the car all you need to do is scuff up the e-coat, I use 400 grit on a da sander then prime with a 2K urethane primer. Any spots of bare metal I like to shoot a coat self etching primer over them, no need to spray the whole thing with the self etch just the bare spots, then go with the 2K primer...Eric
