What is the correct color for the cowl area on a '69 ss396. This is area from base of windshield to the firewall. Thanks for the help. John

John,

The correct color for the cowel is a semi- flat black. Same as the firewall itself as well as the bottom of the underbody.

Thanks very much, you have a very nice SS, can only dream thany mine will come out half as nice. Another question, I have a console to put in and the Muncie has a Hurst shifter, the console will not fit correctly.
Notice you have console and 4 speed. What kind of shifter? Shifter would appear to work with console if shifter arm/rod had a right dogleg where it attaches to to the shifter itself. Any Ideas?? Thanks again for help on cowl color...John

John,

I also have a Hurst Comp shifter. It also would not fit properly because it was technically not the correct shifter for a Chevelle with console. Your options are to purchase the correct shifter (which will have the correct offset for your console). Available from Summit Racing Equipment. Or modify the shifter you have.

Fortunately I live very close to Summit Racing and was able to look at in detail the diference between my shifter and the correct one. The only difference was the offset. (My handle kept hitting the left side of the console). So I modified the offset lever by adding aproximately 1/2 inch of material to give it more offset. I'm going from memory here from about 3 years ago. So measure for yourself. I cut the offset lever, welded in about a 1/2 inch more material and was done. It's fairly simple if you have the equipment. If you don't have the equipment you'll need to disasemble the shifter and have a local welding shop do it for you.

If you need more help E-Mail me and I may be able to work something out with you to be of further assistance. I know it's expensive to buy a whole new shifter. That's why I modified the one I already had.

Brian....thanks again for the information on the shifter. I was hoping there may be a shifter rod with a right hand offset on the market that would work on the Hurst shifter, however, guesss I was hoping for too much. I really appreciate your "how to" advice and will think it through and proceed. You did mention that your shifer rod/handle did have some original offset, mine does not have any offset. I had even thought of heating and bending to put offset in, oh well here we go. Thanks again....John
