Putting new quarters on my 70', read through the archive but would still like some more advice on making the joint at the roof line.
From all the info I gather it should go like this
- Heat, and remove all lead from seem
- Drill out spot welds, remove panel
- Align panel and weld in place
- ???????
- ???????

Here is where I need the most help
-Some say use lead because it is strong and a better filler but others say the lead absorbs the metal etching primer
-Filler over lead is a no-no apparently, because they don't react very good
-Filler alone apparently is not waterproof and not as strong as lead and might crack

Kind of weary about using lead and warping the panel with the torch, but I am sure I can get the hang of it after practicing on the old panel. Still unclear about painting over lead
Would much rather use a plastic/epoxy filler.....easier/safer/non-toxic.

If anyone or anythirty could shed some light on this subject it would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

I used lead almost to finish. Just a skim coat of filler to finish off. No problems here.
You need to tin the metal with acid core lead solder to give the lead something to stick to. Then you will need a lead padel or stick to smooth the lead while it's still hot. The paddel needs to be soaked with oil, 30 wt will work. The older guys used bees wax. Once the job is completed wash throughly with laqure thinner to remove all oil before finishing. You will need some heavy, corse files to do the initial smoothing, then finish with a light coat of body filler.

Another way to skin this cat, is to
weld the seam. after cleaning the weld area
(I like to use a wire brush on an die grinder)Some folks have a spot blast with a small cone .
I like to use evercoat TIGER HAIR ( It's water proof and vary STRONG) as the first coat of filler. knock it down with 36 below
contour and then finish off with you favorite body filler.
