: Epoxy Primer: DP90LF vs. MS 5121

Thinking about putting my '71 into black epoxy primer, until I get the time, $$, and skills to do the bodywork right. Is there a difference between PPG's DP90LF and Martin Senour's 5121? I'm hoping the "california suede" will hold up for a couple of years without turning chalky.

Many thanks,
mark.

I think you will get about the same result with either one. I have seen epoxy used for a color coat on frames and such, but on the outside, you may have problems. I don't believe they have UV protection.
If you have access to Martin Senour, I'd go with Tint/PRIME in black, it has UV protection in it. And it fills well with about 38% solids.

Thanks, MartinSR...
I've heard Tint/PRIME mentioned before, but I'm not familiar with it. Does it give the same (or better) rust protection as an epoxy primer? Or would I need to use an etching or epoxy primer first?

Thanks,
mark.

Mark, good point. Tint/PRIME is a urethane so no, it doesn't have the same corrosion protection as epoxy. You would want to use an etch under it (etch is much cheaper than an epoxy). One thing about Tint/PRIME, it is a bit transparent so when you apply it, don't think that it is not filling. It fills like a mad man but it doesn't cover as well as some other primers. If you have all a coat of etch over the whole thing and it is all a uniform color, it will be fine and you probably wouldn't even notice.
