View Full Version : drop spindles don't fit my factory disc brakes

So I wanted to drop my 71 chevelle and put 18's on it. I have factory disc brakes on it now so I bought a set of 2 inch drop spindles but my brakes don't bolt up to them. So does anyone what discs and calipers I can use to make this work or does it depend on the spindles I have.
Thanks

Hmmmm...I've seen ads for drop spindles that supposedly fit on our A-bodies that need '78-'88 G-body components. Did you happen to buy those?

Unfortunately I bought them on ebay and I've e-mail the seller but he don't respond to my e-mails. I am slowing learning more about chevelles.

Gotta picture? Maybe we can ID them.

Yep, I'm almost certain those use the later model discs.

I just put a set of those on this weekend. I used 78 Monte Carlo parts, you'll need calipers, brake pads, rotors, outer wheel bearings (inner works) possibly rubber brake line and the bolt that attaches it to the caliper.

Cool I'll go to the auto part store and size everything up.
Thanks

more on this..I'm in the middle of a simular swap on my 70, noticed factory rotors(on this car anyway) were 11", the rotors/calipers included with the kit were 10" whats up ??? 11" stock ??car has had lots of changes before I bought it, thanks Rob

Yep, that's the downside to this swap. The rotors are smaller.

Yep, that's the downside to this swap. The rotors are smaller. That's not the only downside... steering arm location is an issue too

Wait a minute, I have the same spindles(2" drop from Ebay) and got a set of rotors for a 71 Chevelle and they will not go on the spindle far enough to bolt on the caliper. But, I tried the new 71 Chevelle rotors on my original spindles and had the same problem, all of the measurements of the existing factory spindle match the new drop spindle perfectly! What are the chances someone swapped out my spindles for a 78 model? That is the problem I am having, I can't get the rotor to go on the spindle far enough to bolton the caliper. I will try a rotor from a 78 and see how it fits. By the way, what is the steering problem associated with these particular drop spindles?
thanks

Do your stock spindles have a bolt-on steering arm and caliper bracket, or is it all cast as 1 piece?

Chevelles had a forged spindle with bolted on steering arms, and 11" rotors.
G-bodies had 1 piece cast spindles and 10" rotors. The steering arms locate the tie-rod too low, causing bump-steer... not sure how the length of the steer arm compares to a chevelle, but turning radius may also be affected.

They are one piece but I thought in 71 they changed the spindles and did away with the bolt on spindle arms but kept the bolt on caliper bracket? You are correct, mine are one piece, someone somewhere down the line installed factory B Body spindles on my 70. What a coincidence!

I hate to say this but unload those spindles on the first sucker that comes along, the brakes for those spindle are junk, way to small for the 78 - 87 Monte, Cutless, GN and the Chevelle is about 400 pounds heavier. If you don't believe me ask anybody who has a quick GN what they think of those crap brakes.

Who makes a quality drop spindle for a reasonable price if that exists ?

Best one available is Heidts 2" drop tall spindle... you'll need aftermarket upper control arms though, but they will make the car handle much better. None of the other drop spindles do anything to help the geometry problems on a Chevelle, and are for looks only.

Fatman makes one too, but they lowered the steer-arm for to correct bump-steer on a Camaro, which makes bumpsteer worse on a Chevelle.
