Hello, my name is matt im 19 years old. I currently own a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle with a 402. Im glad i could join this forum because i really need some professional or knowledgable help with my chevelle. Over the summer of 2005 i was thinking of installing a tilt column shift, i was looking into it and notice i would have to alter some of the dashboard to make clearance, this was after i pulled the factory column out. Im currently trying to re-install this column and i have done everything right so far. I now am trying to put the column back into the steering shaft which is hard being there is just me doing this. The single bolt i pulled out isn't going back the way it came out. I have gotten the bolt to go back through the coupling piece, but when i do the column doesn't go back in, and vise versa. I have tried everything that i can do and still no go. I was wondering if anyone can help me with my unfortunate mishap. Thank you for anyone who can help point me in the right direction. I will be posting regularly because i need to get more information gathered :D. Thanks again.

Matt,
are you talking about the "rag joint" coupling on the steering gear box?
if so, the steering column will only go in one way.
there is a "flat" that has to be lined up and then the bolt will go through.

I dont think that is it. Its a single bolt, with a round head, but insets into a square shape so you dont need two wrenchs. This column is set up as a column shifter. The bolt is located closest to the bar that connects from the transmission to the steering column for a column shift, again forgive me for not knowing the correct termonology im still learning. If i can get some pictures this weekend for you it may help out. But i have tried to get it to go with the column in but no go, then with the column out of the car it goes in, so i then tried to put the column in while the bolt was in and it interfers with the teeth at the end of the column. If im still explaining it bad ill just get pictures and show you. Thank you for trying to help.
