On my 68 malibu being converted to Pro Street, the guy I got the car from was planning on running a pin on style trunklid. Because of that they cut the factory hinges out of the car. I want to run hinges since I plan to make the car streetable and do not want toworry about where to put the trunklid when I go to put fuel in the fuel cell. Anyone know of a company that might have some sort of aftermarket hinge that would work or how hard would it be to put stock hinges back in? Thanks in advance for any replies.

BTW I am planning on putting the car in the paint shop at the beginning of April for the start of the painting process. I figure I should have it back by the end of the summer which works out for my planned schedule.

Putting back the stock hinges would be a tricky deal. Not only do they weld to the inner wheel well but weld to inner package tray. If the hinges and their mounting points are twisted or not in the proper place it can be very hard to fix. I spent an entire day trying to find out why my deck lid wouldnt close right, only to find a small hair line crack where the hinge welded to the package tray. Everytime I closed the lid it would force the hinge upward due to the torque and in turn throw my lid way out whack. I cant imagine how hard it would to replace those hinges if they where cut out, not something I would want to do.

As for aftermarket hinges why not try factory prop or torque rods like what you see on new cars. That in my opinion would be much easir to do then replace factory hinges and look somewhat trick. You can get many different sized rods like at places like pep boys or napa. Check out the hinge mounting on a 93-95 ford taraus. They have a mounting system that I think could be very easy to modify to fit your needs. The mounting point on the hood is a bolt on bracket that could be lengthen to fit where the factory hinges bolt too, and I believe that the bracket on the firewall is also a bolt on bracket.

I think if you go with the prop rods it would be much easier and faster and produce a better shutting lid. Just my opinion...Eric

Thanks alot Eric http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

I was hoping someone would have good idea. the prop rod does sound like a cool trick. I was not looking forward to trying to put factory hinges on since your very correct on they would be a bear to get just right. I do have a bolt on glas lid and plan to use it hopefully I can come up with a donor for the hinges. Time to go to my favorite place, the salvage yard http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
