I just put a full quarter on my 64 chevelle convertable and when we got it welded in we noticed that there was a small dent and there was some oil can to it where the metal had been stretched. I dont want to put heat on it to shrink the metal because I am afraid of warpage. Someone mentioned that you can shrink the metal with dry ice which I tried. The dry ice shrank the metaland got rid of the oil can but as soon as the metal warmed back up the oil can dent was still there. Does anyone have any suggestions or any help on how I can get this dent out without using heat.
Thanks Jeff

The dry ice is more meant for hail dents nothing more, even then it doesnt always work just on the really shallow ones.

You dont want to use heat becuase you are afraid of wrapage. I would be more afraid of a oil can then some slight wrapage that can be hid with a skim coat of mud. A oil can can be hid with mud but it will show itself in due time.

The amount of heat needed to shrink down an oil can is very minimal. If you have access to a stud gun, you can use that to shrink down that dent instead of a torch. Stud guns come with a special shrinking tip , you just hold the tip agaisnt the metal heat it up. Then use a shrinking hammer and dolly and very littly tap the outside diameter of dent working inward in a circular motion. This makes the displaced metal go back to its original position.

Some like to just throw water or oil on the dent after you have heated it but I believe this just does nothing but work harderen the metal making it very hard to reshape and to get it back to its original position. I never throw water on it let it cool down on its own after you have hammered and dollied the dent...Eric
