I'm installing the correct SS wheels on my 71 Chevelle. I want to paint them in the original dark gray color. My problem is all the paint codes (PPG DQE32961, RM 71B16, Dupont 9901L) are all lacquers which are not available in Canada. I spoke to each of these customer service departments, to try and get another type of paint to match, but the conversation always ends in bring in a sample and we'll match it. I Don't have one. For a ridiculous price , I could purchase spray bombs that will match from Early Birds in Toronto, but I would rather paint them properly with a spray gun. Would anybody out there be able to help me find another paint mix that will give me the same color? I would like it to be as close as possible.

Thanks in advance.

One solution would be to buy ONE spray bomb and hand it to the body shop or paint supply store and tell them to match it. If you buy a spray bomb, try Dale's Muscle Car Parts in Bracebridge at 1-877-276-6831. His s/h will likely be cheaper than Early Birds.

I just finished the resto of my '71 SS and I'm going to say that Eastwood's Spray Gray is a perfect match to what I believe to be the original paint. That's what I used right out of a spray can followed by their Diamond Clear (in satin not gloss). I am very satisfied with the results. After dressing them up with new GM beauty rings and center caps they look just like new. Hope this helps. They may look a little dark in my signature photos - if you want email me and I'll take a digital close-up and send it to you.

I agree with topless'72, nice match, and nice car. I would not only like to know what product, but also how many cans did you use? With that amount, did you paint the back of the wheel the same color?

I own a '71 convertible 402 4SP.

Sorry guys, I'm confused about your questions. My earlier post stated that I used Eastwood's Spray Gray followed by a coat of their Diamond Clear (the satin not the gloss). One can of each should do all four wheels. I just cleaned them real good with PPG DX-330 first - but any good quality degreaser will do just fine. I actually painted the inside of the wheels with Argent Silver just because I like the look of it on the insides. Thanks for your comments and email me if I can help further.
