: audio track of my engine ticking
Andy69 Apr 11th, 06, 11:43 AM Hi all
Well I've posted a couple of times about the ticking on my rebuilt 350 in my 69. It sounded to me like a lifter but I adjusted the valves and they seem to be staying adjusted. I also retorqued all the exhaust bolts. I still can't seem to track it down . I thought I'd post an audio clip to see if anyone had any ideas. I hope the quality is good enough.

yost44 Apr 11th, 06, 3:11 PM you may have a colapsed lifter
2k3Chevelle468 Apr 11th, 06, 4:39 PM I chased a similar problem for months. I was lucky enough to get away with replacing my hydraulic lifters without swapping the cam and after I readjusted the valves (for the third time) the tick was gone.

Dean Apr 11th, 06, 7:57 PM One time I had a fuel pump clicking that I would have sworn was a lifter.
gspan1830 Apr 11th, 06, 8:25 PM Was that clip with the valve covers off ?

gspan1830 Apr 11th, 06, 9:56 PM You might take the valve covers off and see if it gets any louder. Get some of those clips that divert oil from spraying on the fenders.
It would be a good time to make sure oil is comming out of all the pushrods too.
mike67sd Apr 11th, 06, 10:01 PM I would check your fuel pump and fuel pump rod-- if pump is faulty arm may not be returning all the way causing play between the rod,the fuel pump lobe, and the pump. By the way does it get any louder when you rev it up?

It gets just a tiny little bit louder when I take the covers off - almost not noticeable. Oil is coming out of all the pushrods, although not squirting out onto the fender but there is plenty of oil up there. The rods are all turning too. I replaced the fuel pump over the weekend with no change. I got out the rubber hose to try to track down the noise again. I remember saying before it seemed tp be coming from #6 exhaust and #8 intake and exhaust pushrod/lifter area, but then when I did it again over the weekend I wasn't quite as sure. It doesn't get louder when I rev it, just faster. I does get louder as the car warms up - it's nonexistent when the car is cold but when the car is warm it's embarrasingly loud. I disconnected both the power steering pump and the alternator without any change. I have a heat riser on that side of the car - if I had a crack in it maybe that would cause a small exhaust leak?

gspan1830 Apr 12th, 06, 8:27 AM I'd take one of the valve covers off and with it running push on the rocker (pushrod side) and listen for a noticable change in the noise.
It sounds like a dry squeak to me.
ranvette Apr 12th, 06, 7:47 PM You dont happen to be running a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy cam are you ?

It's a Comp Cam but I don't know which one. I have an email in to the builder but have not yet heard back.

ranvette Apr 12th, 06, 9:08 PM OK a Xtreme Energy cam will not be noisy when the engine is cold. But when it warms up than you can hear the valves closing when the engine is up to normal temp. They sound like a solid lifter cam maybe just a little louder.I have one in my 70 SS 396. It had me wondering what was up with my motor to.Until I found out these cams can be noisy. Now I kinda like it

I once had a heat riser make a simular ticky/sqealy sound one time...took about a week to find it. I took a broom stick to it with some preasure and found it. Have you tried someting like that yet?
I think I sprayed something on it that fixed the problem? or I poked it a few times with the broom stick and it stopped the noise. (It was a used riser by the way) Hope you get as lucky as I did! Dan
chevymad Apr 12th, 06, 9:38 PM The clip sounds alot like my comp XE cams. I have 2 of them both mild(xe256 and xe262) both click like that. One is probably 7 years old now, the other 5.. and both are in daily drivers. Hasn't seemed to hurt anything. It's more annoying in my old truck because there's less sound insulation, when I moved one engine from the truck to the car I couldnt hear the noise from inside anymore. Certain valves seem to make more noise but the adjustment always appears to be correct. There's probably 100k on one motor and 50k on the other.
