Anybody have any good tricks to keep shift rods from rattling? I have a Richmond ROD 6 speed and the shift rods are making ALOT of noise. I just rebuilt the trans and adjusted the shifter so I know it's not an adjustment thing. Shifts beautiful it's just noisy when you get on it and the engine is spinning fast.

Thanks, Lance

Sounds like the motor along with something like your driveshaft is out of ballance.

But since you say it's doing it ONLY when you get on it at higher rpms so it if it only does it then neve just while crusing at highway speed than i would look more towards a motor ballance issue and not driveshaft.

Nope the motor and the driveshaft are fine. It does it when your just cruising too. It's very slight and almost tolerable when your cruising along. If you put a little load on the stick (remove the tolerance in the fit between them all) it goes away. When your on it they sounds like they're in a coffee can next to your ear and somebody shaking the crap out of the can :)

Lance,
Most Hurst shifters will rattle some if they have the steel bushings in them. Thats why they used to come with the plastic ones, to keep the noise down. Have you tried greasing them up some to see if it helps ? Also, make sure that all of the spring clips that hold the arms in place have washers behind them. Sometimes a thicker washer or a little reforming of the clip to put more tension on it will help.

As a once - upon - time engineer that was responsible for the floor shifters at Chrysler, I would recommend some thin wave washers to hold the linkage tight. They are available at hardware stores.

BillK & JWagner,

Both good ideas and I have seen shifters that have had these solutions before and just had forgotten about them. I think I'll give those a try. I might be back for more ideas :)
