If it's really an SS it can be fixed no matter how much rust. I'm in the process of a frame-off on my 66 SS. I've put in new full floor pans, windshield lower molding, rear window to trunk filler panel, new full trunk and rear tail panel. I need to fix some areas around the inner & outer rear wheel wells, lower section of the passenger front fender, some spots on both door. Had to patch a few pieces on the roof and sail panel too...

This restoration project is MUCH more work than the restoration I did with my son on his 66 Nova - which has hardly ANY rust at all - but I look at it this way - I'm becoming a better welder :)

Let's see some pictures of the trouble areas...

By plates do you mean the Fisher Body plate and VIN plate? Aside from swapping Fisher Body plates being unethical IMO, swapping VIN plates is illegal.

how much is too much ??? depends on lots of things...who's car was it ? someone famous ?? can you prove it with paperwork ??? do a wall full of trophys come with it ?? get the Idea ??? if it doesn't meet any of the above... then just start out with a goodmark catolog.. somewhere around twice that the car will bring is usually about what they cost to repair

Pulling SS vin tags and placing them on a malibu is an immoral, illegal and just plain out dirtbag thing to do.
