: Anyone take apart a 6 speed (T56) before?

Just got done with my 6 speed swap. Bought the trans used of course. Only problem is when I go to put it in 3rd gear, it just grinds and doesn't engage.

Any ideas of what this is?

I've got the tremec manual which is pretty straight forward.

I've had a few different T-5's apart with success.

I can build an engine.

Can I fix this trans?

I have no idea where to take it. People around the Portland area seem to be good with autos, not so much standards.

Thanks guys

Well, never done one but I would start with a book. Try this

Me and a couple of friends took one apart a year and a half ago..

It's a pretty simple tranny once you open it.. Nothing really can happend it all goes back together...
(yeah and we checked.. it's working after we took it apart and put it back together :D )

It might be only the synchronizer rings and keys that you need to replace

I was under the impression, that if the synchros went, that you could still engage the gear?

This is acting as if it was a mechanical linkage trans, that was adjusted poorly, in which the lever did not engage fully (Acting as if the shifter was not pushed far enough.)

Sounds like maybe a bent shift fork from someone trying to cram the thing into third.

Could also be and most likely is a clutch/bellhousing alignment problem.

Is the clutch releasing adequately? (i.e. have someone press the clutch in and check the airgap with feeler gauges)

Is the pilot bearing/bushing in good shape?

How was the bellhousing alignment? On modern trannies with tapered roller bearings on the input shafts (the T56 included) the bellhousing radial misalignment needs to be .005 or better and the parallelism at .001 or better. Modern sticks are MUCH more picky to bellhousing alignment than older trannies.

I'd check the bellhousing and clutch with a fine tooth comb before tearing into the tranny.

I have the service manual someplace online. From what I remember, biggest thing is a fizture to hold it vertical and then from there is straght forward.

Gokou: It does the same thing out of the car, that it does in the car.

I used a dial indicator to set the brand new Lakewood bellhousing, it was right on.

It's a hydraulic clutch, no air gap. And when driving in the other gears, the clutch releases properly.

Pilot bearing is brand new McLeod bushing.

Shop says he thinks the slider is not engaging for some reason just by outer symptoms. He's going to open it up and tell me what's wrong for free.

Said he'll replaced anything that's bad, all new bearings, and steel 3-4 shift fork for about $300.

Sounds fair to me.

When I drained the fluid, nothing but fluid came out, so hopefully the teeth are still there.
