: Hobbiest Becoming Distributor for Hobbiests
Rucumn Aug 27th, 03, 9:15 PM It has been awhile since I have been to this forum (2 years?) But I have started to get back into restoring the good 'ol chevelles and I am working on becoming a Goodmark distributor. I don't intend to make a lot of money, but only support the hobby I love in a little more cost effective manner. I need to place a large order in the next few weeks and I am inquiring to see if anyone in my area would like me to include their orders at a great cost savings with no shipping costs (you pick up!). I will only charge 10% over cost to support storage and some operating costs. Most items are marked up 20-40% over cost. Of course, the GM Licensed stuff is about 20% mark up so I can't get too good of a deal, but just ask and I will respond. Again, not trying to solicit, but only trying to help others with cost effective solutions. I can also advise and help with restorations if needed, just check with me. I am a quality engineer by profession and I have 12 years of experience dabbling with body work and full/partial restorations - mostly chevelles, but some trucks and shoebox cars.

jmhardin Aug 27th, 03, 9:23 PM Hum? Been two years and you just registered this month? What was you other screen name.
Clark68 Aug 27th, 03, 9:39 PM Hey I would be more than happy to order my part from ya! I need a passenger side graemlins/beers.gif rear outer wheel well section for a 68 chevelle. How long before you will actually be a dealer and how long till I get the part? email me at clark_packer@hotmail.com (http://clark_packer@hotmail.com) when you get further details
Rucumn Aug 27th, 03, 9:55 PM First off, sorry for the multiple postings of the same topic, its the rookie syndrome all over again! That back button must have stuck!
jmhardin,
Not sure what you intended the context of your post be, but I will assume it is a fair question. I think that my previous user name was Hugh or could have been Rucumn as well? I was actually registered on this site starting sometime back in 1997 when I purchased my 70. I was active until probably sometime in 2000 or 2001 when my child was born and internet time kind of stopped. My intention is not to solicit, I have the necessary order amount needed already, but trying to increase awareness of affordable source for the other hobbiests. Also, I am new to the NC area (about 1 year) and looking to meet my kind of people - networking helps in this hobby.
Professor_SS Aug 28th, 03, 8:15 AM Stick around the site man. Not ready for anything right now but close enough that I could drive down when I'm ready.

I will be starting back to work Tue. and will need some parts.I tryed to do the same thing but with radiators. My problem was that seeing that I didn't buy in bulk I couldn't get the good prices, when auto zone can match most of my prices($10 over cost)on the same rads it is tough for the little guy to get started.I wish you all the luck, will e-mail you my needs on the body parts.

70isfine Aug 28th, 03, 9:01 AM I'm an authorized goodmark distributor. With the discount they give me, the prices are a few bucks cheaper than other catalogs and thats it. For example if you buy an 80% camaro quarter dirctly from Goodmark its $129. If you buy it from Ricks the same panel(goodmark panel) is $109. So even with a nice discount you have to compete with the catalogs. Now if you add on shipping to get the piece to you ,then you need to ship it to someone you sold the peice too, Not much room for a profit there.
Rucumn Aug 28th, 03, 3:56 PM Yeah, 70isfine is right - "not much room for profit" But luckily I have a steady source of income and I am not in it for profit. I really don't even want to get involved in mailing parts too much... I just thought that I really could benefit some of the hobbiests and shops in my area by selling cheap with no shipping costs to them. Granted, there is NPD in Charolette and quite a few others in the area, but I think that I can beat their prices for the locals because I will have very little overhead to support, just storage and small profit (must show some profit to continue business license, but not necessary the first couple years). I will also show profit by sheeting cars and then selling them for a profit.
Anyone is welcome to email me at belgarde@triad.rr.com - like I said, the plan is to put the first big order (must be at least $5000 - which I have covered already)in within 3 weeks. I will not place additional orders until I have enough to place them in $3000 increments - amount required for free delivery. I do not plan to carry an inventory at first, so if you need something within the next few months, let me know soon. I will be on vacation all next week, but will respond when I return.
Randy Mosier Aug 28th, 03, 6:12 PM Do you have a store or warehouse that you're selling out of? If so, you might consider selling other products used in this hobby like auto body supplies, welding wire for mig welders, Zero Rust and Por 15, tools, and safety equipment. It's something you could build up over time, as opposed to sinking a lot of money into up front. Sell the sheetmetal now, add some body supplies later, then add a line of tools later on after that; you get the picture!!
Rucumn Aug 28th, 03, 7:42 PM I would like to carry other stuff, but I don't have too much time with all my projects and work. I really don't think I can make the same living off of distributing parts and supplies as I can in my engineering position, given today's economic fluctuations.
I have always envisioned starting a restoration business that speciallized in cost effective solutions for building cars the way the customer wants it and with a very quick turn around. Services envisioned would be up front project management schedule and contacts. The idea is the project would be detailed step by step and my company or other identified sources would be scheduled at specified dates to complete speciallized portions of the restoration. This would allow lower costs to the customer by managing the work so that we always have a full schedule - No idle time, means more money being made which equals lower prices. Body shops will not touch restorations anymore due to the unpredictability and lack of specialized equipment for those types of jobs. Insurance work is too profitable and easy, so shops will stick with those types of jobs.
I don't know if I will have the guts to start such a business, but if a big time auto collector ever came along and offered me a chance to start on their projects at a set contract, I might take the plunge - I am not banking on it.
BillK Aug 28th, 03, 9:53 PM Hugh,
I hate to burst your bubble, but if you go to Goodmarks home page and click on the "becoming a disributor" link...you will find that unless you are a legitimate business it isn't going to happen. Personally, as a business owner, I am glad to see a company protecting the interests of thier distributors who are legitimate businesses, such as 70isfine.
Rucumn Aug 29th, 03, 1:29 PM Billk,
I have been in contact with Danny Boote at Goodmark who is in charge of sales and all I need is a business license. I did not say that I wasn't going to be a legitimate business, I plan on buying panels and sheeting cars, so I will be giving them business. My intentions are not directed at business owners, they are intended at making this hobby more affordable and keeping it alive for the next generation. Prices are becoming outrageous because everyone is making money off of the consumer. This hobby is becoming only for the rich and that is not cool. If I can save some of the local boys, body shops included, some money then I have served a good purpose and still supported my business endeavors.
You can look at it as kind of a Group Purchase that I see so much of on this site! - Excellent buying power when we all get together.
crowenate Aug 29th, 03, 11:36 PM I just became a goodmark and raybestos disrtibutor today. All I had to do for good mark was send them a copy af my tax # and my business lisence. But if you really want the good discounts you have to pay the 5 grand up front.Raybestos is a little harder to become a distributor but now that they have the new brute stop rotors and pads its worth it.I just like to be around the automotive industry is why im even doing it because anyone that has seen the distributor prices for goodmark knows there is no money in it,unless you put up th 5 grand and have a good stock.I noticed some of my prices are higher than opg's or npd,or ground up,retail, but it works out to where you can save a few dollars and help your chevelle buds too,so its worth it.
Rucumn Sep 14th, 03, 9:50 PM I am putting the 5 grand up front tomorrow. Actually the 5 grand is directly toward your first order and additional orders if you don't use it. My first order will actually be around 6.5k due to the amount of panels that some of my friends need and due to the response I got from this posting. This really helps to get the lower prices and pass them on to the other hobbiests. I will be finding out the total savings tomorrow, but one insight I was given for example: 70-72 chevelle quarters retail $549 ea, but if purchasing 6-8 (can't remember number) the cost was ~$389 ea. This was the figure I was given back in May, but it should still be that way.
If anyone will be interested in a completely rust free '67 chevelle, then give me about 5 weeks and I should have one of mine competely resheeted with all new panels, including full floors. This will be the true indicator of how everything fits together. I know the quarters that Goodmark offers are excellent for these cars.

Rucumn Sep 15th, 03, 9:08 PM Thanks for looking that up Chad!
I should have looked up my previous info and tried to re-activate my account insead of signing up again. Looking at my previous info, I noticed that my "Tech Reg #606", does that mean that I was the 606th person to register on chevelles.com?
Maybe I should cancel this username and go back to my previous since I had about 167 posts at that time? I should be able to get my old password right?
