I have a an all black with a vinyl top so I know the trouble it takes to keep it looking good. I scrub mine with a vinyl cleaner from Maguires and a soft bristle brush. Those tops can hold a lot of dirt so scrub it good.
For the protectant, I've tried them all. If you get one of the 'thicker' stuff that stays shiney for a long time, it attracks dirt, holds it and it will come off the top and run down the sides of the car when you wash the car. The run off marks the paint up. I now go with a thinner solution like the standard Armor All and wipe it down afterward. You just have to apply more often.

I have a beige top on my 72 Cutlass and I use the GM vinyl cleaner followed with the GM top dressing called either acetone or acetane(can't remember). It makes the 30 year old top look real clean after the cleaner is applied and has a nice shine after the top dressing. Scrub it good though. Hope this helps.

Thanks fellas. Gettin out of New Mexico and moving to Oklahoma is gonna make a difference too. There won't be as much dry heat to dry it out all the time.

I do not know what I was thinking. It is Preservatone not acetone-stupid! That is what happens with 2 hours of sleep.

I have a white vinyl top on my El Camino. It's orginal. When I got the car, it was basically a dirty yellow, I wasn't even sure what the original color was, it looked even too dirty for beige. Well, I scrubbed it with scrubbing bubbles (yeah, the bathroom cleaner) and it really came clean. Now, I keep it clean by reguaraly scrubbing it with warm soapy water when I wash the car. I don't use any type of protectant. I heard a long time ago that using stuff like Son of a Gun and Amor All was bad for the vinyl tops. I've seen people use shoe polish to make them shine, but that isn't a good idea at all. When it rains, you get shoe polish running down the sides of the car, that can't be good, lol.
