: new guy here
wadedog Apr 6th, 06, 11:38 PM This is my first post and i have heard alot of good recomendations about this site.
I am getting ready to build a sb for my 79 malibu and i need some advice.
It is going to be a summer car only and not a daily driver, a street / strip car but mostly street.
I don't mind using premium gas but i don't want to have to run race gas only.
Right now it is a stock bore 350 with stock dish pistons ,dynomax coated headers, victor jr intake,HEI,holley vacume 600 carb, unknown cam but there is no lope sound to it,camel hump heads original components not sure if it's got 202 valves, stock crank along with other engine parts are stock.
It has a tb 350 trans with local shift kit and B&M 3000 stall converter, mega shifter, small 10 bolt rear with posi and 373 gears.
It ran a best of 13.6 last year with a 60 of 1.98 on bfg radial ta street tires (275/60/15 )
I want to be in the 12's easy and still be streetable.
I wouldn't mind using a bottle later on in a couple years if needed for more punch but probabaly nothing more than a 150 shot at max.
I just bought a set of aluminum pro topline heads,205/160 valves 200 cc runers and 72cc chambers, 1.6 stamped rockers.
I have a built dp holley 650 ready to go on and a vacume 750 that needs rebuilt i could use instead of the wimpy 600 carb, but i'm not sure which one to use ?
I plan on boring the engine out 30 over and trying to get the compression up to 10.1 or 10.5 as long as i can run on premium pump gas but i'm also not sure what pistons to buy, can anyone give me some advice.
Another big problem is which cam to use.
I have been trying to research this subject alot and i get alot of different opinions and i want to hear what the real world says about the cams over what i read from the cam makers in catalogs, i read your search topics on this subject and i wanted a personal opinion from the experts here so fire away.
I'm leaning towards the voodoo cam - 60104
Does this sound like the best cam choice for me and still have vacume for power brakes.
Also a few people have told me not to use this cam because of the danger of not breaking it in correctly, are these just bad rumors or is there a special procedure for the voodoo line up ?
thank in advance,Wade.

67RS502 Apr 7th, 06, 1:14 AM What mph did your ride pull on the 13.6 pass, since your 60ft was weak, you may be makin enough power already to go 12s, 105 would be good for mid 12s if you can 60ft well. Youll need 400-425hp+/- (depending on weight) to run low 12s - shouldnt be hard with decent heads.
UDHarold Apr 7th, 06, 2:40 AM Wade,
Welcome here, and I will be happy to give you some cam advice about the VooDoo cams. I am the designer of those cams, although I no longer work for Lunati. They are the best hydraulic cams you can buy, at least until this December, when I hope to have something better out.
The VooDoo 60104 should work just fine with your converter and rear gears. You didn't mention your fuel pump, but I recommend a Carter 172-gph or the equivalent Holley, both mech pumps, and 1/2" #8 fuel line from your tank all the way to the carb. Stock fuel pumps or even 3/8" lines can let the float bowls frun out of gas about 5500.
Your new heads have 1.6 rockers. For break-in, I'd borrow a set of 1.5s, and run only the outer spring if you have a dual-spring with a dampner. The valve lift with the 1.6s is .539" on the intake, .561" on the exhaust, and the lower the spring pressure on the nose, the more successful the break-in.
Your engine should have between 425 to 450 REAL horsepower, and you can add 50-60 BHP for those liberal West-Coast dynos.
I think you should have between 12" to as much as 14" of vacuum at idle, perhaps some of our members who have the 276 VooDoo in 10"1 355s could post what vacuum they are getting. Our testing was on a different LSA, and in a 9.2 CR 355, and we got 12".
Welcome here, again, and the best of success....
UDHarold
Johnny O Apr 7th, 06, 6:50 AM Welcome Wade, you've come to the right place. Sounds like a good combo. I think you'll be spending a lot of time here. John
wadedog Apr 7th, 06, 2:42 PM welcome aboard wadedog u the sam eone from maliburacing?
yes it's me the one and only, lol
wadedog Apr 7th, 06, 3:00 PM Thanks alot guys for the warm welcome.
It looks like this is a good place to be.
And thanks UDHarold, it's very good to meet the man behind the voodoo cams.
I will go with 1.5 rockers then. no problem.
I was thinking of going to 1/2" fuel line while it was aprt now anyway, now i for sure will.
I'm just running the stock fuel pump right now but i was thinking of changing it anyway with the engine build.
Do you have any idea what pistons i should buy to get my compression up with the 72 cc chambers in order to be close to 10.5 ?
Do you think it would run best with the 650 carb or am i wasting time with it, or go ahead and have the 750 rebuilt ?
My mph was 98.46 to answer 67rs ' question.
thanks.
bracketchev1221 Apr 7th, 06, 5:47 PM There are a few malibu guys here also. I myself had a 406 79 malibu and a 355 78 with a four speed. I ran the JE/SRP series pistons in my 355 and they were great for a street/strip motor.
wadedog Apr 7th, 06, 5:55 PM Thanks for helping me out guys, i appreciate it.
Any brand piston to stay away from ?
I can't afford the best pistons but i still want a good reliable piston in the average price range that may have to deal with a little gas later ( forged ).
Can anyone tell me for sure what size dome ( if needed ) i have to use to get my compression up.
I don't have any cc equipment but i'm hoping somebody has already been in my shoes.
thanks.
bracketchev1221 Apr 7th, 06, 5:58 PM Check the JE piston website. They give listings for their pistons as far as dome size and estimated compression with different size heads. It will at least give you a ball park idea. For an affordable piston you still can't beat a Speed Pro forged piston.

thank in advance,Wade.I am not trying to up-set you, but who talked you into buying a set of heads with this large a port volume?

Several "experts" . Are they that bad ?
Rich69RS/SS Apr 8th, 06, 10:48 AM Work on those 60ft times.
wadedog Apr 8th, 06, 10:55 AM Work on those 60ft times.
yep my 60's were poor because of the hadr tires i used.
I had to really heat them up to get that much out of them, lol.
Did the mph tell you anything?
wadedog Apr 8th, 06, 11:33 AM hey UDHarold how is this fuel pump for me.

N20 GO Apr 8th, 06, 11:47 AM Several "experts" . Are they that bad ?No they are not that bad. With your gear, cam, stall speed.comp. ratio etc. I.M.O. the car would work better with a head that has a port volume of around 180 cc.
bracketchev1221 Apr 8th, 06, 1:33 PM I don't think it will be that bad, since you already have them use them. I did a 355 with 10.3-1, 200cc sportsman II steel heads with .530 ultradyne solid lifter cam. Victor jr manifold and 750. Like was said before though this car had 4400 converter and 4.56 gears. It gets driven all over on the street and at the track goes 11.70's at 116. This is in a stock appearing 69 camaro.

bracketchev1221 Apr 8th, 06, 1:52 PM Read it again. I'm not comparing, I'm telling him that the heads will work since he has them. And I'm agreeing with you that it uses higher stall and gears.

wadedog Apr 8th, 06, 10:39 PM thanks guys.
does my mph look right at the track compared to my set up now.
How about that fuel pump does anyone know if that would be good for my future build up?
blazerbob Apr 8th, 06, 11:24 PM I wouldn't use a no name (Manufacturer) fuel pump someone is selling on ebay unless would know more about it, who made it, where does it come from?! Use the fuel pumps that Harold recommended period!
