: Buffing out older lacquer paint

The paint on my car is around 10 yrs old, it's a clear coat lacquer. I carefully buffed out most of the car with 3M's cleaner wax, it shines like glass.

My pass quarter needs a little more than just a cleaner wax, it's seams rough and kind of dull as if it was not buffed properly when done originally. Someone recommended color sanding - using a 1000 or 1500 grit paper and polish compound. I am nervous that I may ruin the paint on the quarter.

Any suggestions on how best to get it to shine properly?

Thks

I would try buffing it with 3m perfect-it II compound and a foam pad,if it still doesn't come up,try color sanding with 1500 grit, then buffing it.There is a chance you could sand or buff thru the paint but it's a chance you have to take.

I agree with 70 excepct i would use 2000 after the 1500 makes poloshing much easyer.
Also try using clay magic first. this should take out the roughness in the paint caused by dirt thats gets stuck in paint! Then use some compoud. or machine glaze.

Now, when you say 'rough', do you mean orange peel or like 2,000 grit paper? If it's like orange peel, it will have to be sanded with 1500, 2000 then buffed with perfect-it. If it's like sandpaper rough, use a machine & rubbing compound, then Perfect-it. Always start with the least abrasive method and move up the scale to get the desired effect. In other words, don't do more than you have to!
