69 hood hinges are unique to 69's. 70-72 are the same, so 71 hinges won't work on a 69.

Hey thanks for the info, that would have been a waste of money to get them then, I have one bad one.

1970-1972 hinges will work on a 1969 however the 70's hinges have a tab with a notch on the back of the hinge. This engages the saftey bolt on the 70-72 cowl that keeps the hood from going through the windshield in case of an accident. The hinges will operate fine, they will just look different on the back of hinge.

Whatever you buy, make sure to measure the spacing between the bolt holes on the hood.. Most 69 hoods are spaced 14 3/8" from center to center, while 68 hoods are 12 1/4".. Aside from that, they're identical..

You can cut the tab off the 70-72 hinges to make them appear identical to '69 hinges.

Yep, I have a 70 hinge on my 69 that I cut the tab off of and you can't tell which one it is.

Question wasn't about 68's Scott.

I understand, but unless he never checked he wouldn't know if it was a 68 hood or a 69!!

I sure as hell never knew I had a 68 hood till I had a conversation with Scott (red68chevl I believe) at Chevelle-a-bration last year.. I was showing him how somebody had put the "wrong hinges" on my car. & it turned out that the hood was in fact a 68 & the hinges were correct for a 69..

If I would have ordered a set of 69 hinges without knowing, they wouldn't have fit.. I was just trying to offer that side of it, in case he was in the same situation I was..

Please excuse my ignorance, Dean..

So just for clairifacation. A 71 hinge he is looking at buying will indeed fit on his 69 with some modification on the tab at the back of the hinge then correct?

correct, well actually it'll fit without modifications, just won't look right.

No, MY ignorance Scott, not yours.
Sorry I didn’t understand what you were trying to say.
If you had just said “make sure you have a 69 hood not a 68 hood", thick headed people like myself would have known.
I’m so use to sooo many people posting answers about some other vehicle, different that the one the question is about, I jumped to conclusion.
:o

The fiesty one :)

None needed.. I was probably also feeling a little fiesty when I typed that reply;) ..I guess it just bent me the wrong way because I was honestly trying to help with a situation that I had just been in myself..

After all, that is EXACTLY what this site is all about

Have a GREAT day,
Scott

If you want a couple I have them from my car as I switched to a fiberglass hood. They are yours for the cost of shipping if you want them.

An interesting sidenote.
The 68 hood hinges allow the hood to open further. A lot further in fact.
If you measure from the tip of the header panel to the tip of the hood when open, you'll find that a 68 opens quite a bit further than a 69.
So.......if you want easier access to your engine compartment, use a 68 hood with 68 hinges.
There is a another good thread from not too long ago about hood hinges and interchangeability. I believe that there are lots of cars that use the same hood hinge as a 68 Chevelle, which by the way is one year only on the Chevelle ....1968 !
Try a 68-7? 79? Nova, or any of the same X bodys. Ventura...etc.

The trick is finding the 68 hood.
I've held onto 2 68 Chevelle stock hoods for years now just because of this little known fact.

Good Nova hood hinges are a dime a dozen in the wrecking yards.
