: Where do I start sanding?

I have a 67. It has cracks in paint here 7 there, bubbles form what looks like old/bad primer or rust under the paint, few small bangs and dents, nothing crazy. Where do I start? Some guy told me to sand blast the whole thing, some other guy said heck no don't do that. Any info or book leads would be great. Thanks.

Troy, what every you do DONT sand blast it. If the paint is as bad as it sounds you will probably want to take it down to the metal, but I can tell you that is a job, but if you have 3 or 4 layers of paint or rust under the paint etc, that is your only option. This is the way I took/taking the 69 coupe down to bare metal. get some good chemicial stripper and be sure to get in a well vented area and also wear gloves (elbow length) and filter mask. use a paint brush and just brush it on and in about 15 min. scrape it off, if you wait to long to scrape it seems the chemicials evaporate and its harder to get off.
After you have most of the paint off use a D/A sander with 80 grit paper to get the remaining paint off. dont stay in one area to long and dont keep sanding if the paint is gone, also keep checking your metal to make sure its not getting to hot. After it is clean I wipe the panel down with wax/grease remover and use body filler to work any damage. after the filler has been worked I spray several light coats of etching primer then spray a few thick coats of urathane filler primer after the etching primer is dry.

I agree with ragtop DONT SANDBLAST any exterior sheetmetal, like fenders, hoods, quarters. The pressure of the sand, the irregular shaped sand hit the metal with such force it creates tons of heat localized in one small spot. That heat can warp sheetmetal so fast you wont even see it HAPPEN. Even the most experienced metal workers would have problems fixing that kind of damage.

But you can MEDIA blast the exteroir metal. This media would be like plastic beads or even baking soda. If you call a sand blasting outfit they most likely might also do media blasting if not am sure they know of people that do.

This will be probably the same cost as buying chem stripper and doing it yourself. The shop I work at took a 90's chevy truck down to get blasted, the cost was around 350 to 400 bucks if I remember right. For 400 bucks no way would I strip a car with chem stripper...Eric

I second the chem strip idea. It took less than 2 gallons to do my whole car and as far as DA paper the one roll lasted me through the project.
Total=40 for the stripper and 37 for the sandpaper
More work than contracting out a blaster but a lot less money.
