Hey guys. Great site. Im new to this so this may be a stupid question. I bought a 68 Chevelle SS a few weeks ago. The 396 has been replaced with a 454 with cam. The guy i bought it from told me he took everything off the 396 and put it on the 454. Including the 650 carb. There is a local gas station that has "race gas" 110 test. Would it cause any problems to run this gas in my Chevelle?

Thanks,
Marty

Running gas with that much octane will most likely be a huge waste of money unless the 454 has 13 to 1 compression. Super unleaded should be more than adequate for your engine. If you'd like you can add a few gallons to of the race gas to your tank to boost the 92 or 93 octane & add a little race gas smell .

If you run hi test and don't need it, you'll actually probably be down on power. As octane goes up, rate of burn slows and hurts power. Octane rating doesn't indicate how much power you can make, it's a fuel's resistance to detonation. Most agree that you should run the lowest octane you can without detonation/pinging.

Thanks guys. One other question. Is there a very low profile air cleaner i can use? The rear of the hood is about 3/8" to high but it cant go down any further because of the air cleaner.

Thanks,
Marty

Yes, they are readily available. You can gar a low profile cleaner or a drop base. Try your local parts store, www.jegs.com www.summitracing.com or get the factory replacement from groundup restorations.
