: Steering Column off to the left, HELP!

Ok, so I just installed some new racing seats, and I bolted them down using a piece of flat bar bolting to the original holes and drilling the flat bar for the new seats, and made sure they were lined up evenly w/ the original holes on the floor. I then looked at the steering column and saw that it was off about 1/8" to the left, which makes the steering wheel off too. Is it possible my steering column is bent, or installed wrong, because now when I sit in my new seat, it feels crooked, but I don't think its the seat thats crooked.

I then tryed to compensate for the steering column by re-measuring and drilling new holes next to the existing holes in the flat bar, and that just made the seat crooked to the right, so I just put the seat in my original holes. I went through 2 pieces of flat bar doing this. Is there anyway I can make the steering column straight, or are other early chevelle like mine????? Thanks for any help. I would really appreciate it. Was it centered with the old seat (probabally) - Your new seat needs to move slightly to the right. If it's only an eighth off I wouldn't worry too much about it. Could you look at another 65?

That little 1/8" sounds little, but it makes the steering wheel not straight w/ everything else like the dash. I'll call my friends friend who has a 64 chevelle, and let u know.

How about trying between the other two holes? ....Just a thought.

I already tryed moving the seat to where it was comfortable w/ the steering wheel, but all that did was make me crooked, pointing to the right. I'll take a picture. My seat is straight, the steering wheel isn't, you know.

Are you sure the mounts underneath the seat itself is centered under the seat?

here you go, have a look on each side, and checkout the spacing between the column.

i don't think you will find a straight column in the 60's chevelles. go get into a 66 corvette. it's way to the right. chuckle.

I was thinking the same thing. I have noticed that the steering column is not perfectly aligned and perpendicular to the seat in some cars, so I wouldn't be surprised if it came that way from the factory. I guess someone with a -65 and buckets will have the answer for you.

I also find it hard to believe that the steering column is bent. Can't see how that could happen or that it would even be possible. If the column goes through the hole in the firewall and is mounted to the dash, it should be where it was mounted from the factory. And 1/8" seems to be within normal Chevy tolerances. ;)

I was also, thinking it had something to do w/ my hooker 2" headers, because when I first installed them, they were rubbing against the steering shaft before it made an indent on the shaft from wearing into it.

I guess I can't do nothing about the column, but now I'm also thinking it's how the seat was made. The racing seats are the ones you can buy from Summit or even Kragen for $120 each. I'm thinking the back part of the seat is off, the bottom part of the seat seems very straight w/ the pedals. I don't know, I'll have a look at my friends chevelle too.
