The first 3 of the vin# are different (134?? I think) but I was told all base models had the same first 3#s in 71-72. A build sheet would help.

The Y code is not on the cowl tag. 540cutlassSS is correct. All base chevelles had a 134 vin in 71. Just like the SS, you really need some original doc's to know for sure. There are alot of "Lick and Stick" Heavy's out there.

On page 75 of the catalog of chevelle, malibu and el camino ID numbers 1964-87 indicates the Yf3 has 2 cars-# 13639-4dr.Sport Sedan-6 pass. and #13667 as a 2dr. Convertible-5 pass.

*SS-350/SS-454, Heavy Chevy options available.

That book HAS to be wrong....
Don't really know if 13639 decodes to something, but a 4dr sedan is 13669.. :)

And if i am not mistaken the YF3 is the option code of the Heavy Chevy.. which means it would only appear on the Build sheet... No?

I have a '72 Heavy Chevy: VIN: 1C37J2K530117 with the original build sheet. The YF3 option on the build sheet indicates it is a Heavy Chevy. The only way I knew it was a Heavy Cheavy was from the build sheet and not the Cowl Tag.
