: Looking for a good CD player and speakers?
Chevelle408 Apr 4th, 06, 7:52 PM I'm in the market for a CD player that I can hook a Mp3 up to for around $130 and a good set of speakers (front and rear) for around $120. I don't like rap, so I'm not looking for anything with much of a bass, I like classic rock if that helps any. This is all for my '70 Chevelle. One more question, has anyone tried the kick pannel speakers from OPG? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
erikbuzz Apr 4th, 06, 8:06 PM Pioneer for the deck. Go with Infinity reference 6x9s in the back and tweeters in the front. Should be about in the price range, maybe a little high, but you won't regret it.
Johnny O Apr 4th, 06, 10:06 PM Go to a car stereo shop (not big box store) and listen to a few different head units with some different speakers. You'll be very surprised at the differences in them. If you want to save some money, ask them if there is any unit that's coming off of the demo board, they will usually sell it at a discount, but as a fully warranty'd new unit. I have bought a couple units this way. John
thunderstruck507 Apr 5th, 06, 2:03 AM I agree: Pioneer CD player
Rockford speakers might be pretty reasonable too. I have 6x9s in the deck and kickpanels with pioneer 6in in them for front. Don't get the speakers that come in the kickpanels, they suck.
And by the way, even if you only listen to rock once you hear a nice "low" power system you won't ever go back to simple head/speaker systems. The added bass sounds so much better with every type of music. I'm not talking about anything serious, just a 12" with 200 watts or less is damn nice.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
BTW: a nice deck is going to be over your budget. the lowest end Pioneer I would buy is $164 out the door, I know cause I just bought one for my dad
chev65elleSS Apr 5th, 06, 4:42 AM Pioneer cd players all the way in my chevelle. Check out ebay, don't go to a Best Buy or Al & Ed's Autosound places, they're way overpriced. I got my 6x9 pioneer speakers(300watts) for $20 at a swap meet, brand new, and a cheap 2 10" subwoofer box from an autoparts store for like $40, I was surprised on the sound, and they're still lasting for me, I blast them almost everyday. All around I spent about no more then $300 on my system, and installed it myself.
Mali Blu Apr 5th, 06, 12:49 PM Ive been told Infinity speakers are the best, Rockfords sound really good to me.
As for your price range for a head unit, youd better double it if you want MP3 and i-pod conectivity. Alpine has some nice units.
You pay for what you get. Did you skimp on the parts for your car? Why skimp on the stereo? I never understood the guy at the car show who spent untold thousands on his car ,yet has the cheapest kraco stereo on the market.
Chevelle408 Apr 5th, 06, 2:38 PM Thanks, I don't want to go cheap at all. That was just a flexable budget.
obseSSed Apr 5th, 06, 5:57 PM I had a Pioneer head unit with Infinity speakers and then installed a power amp in the trunk. Wow what a difference just adding the amp, even at lower volume. You can add an amp for not much more and you will have a much more full and powerful sounding stereo. You'll be glad you did! You don't even have to blow the windows out or have your ears ringing for three days. Don't forget to run good quality speaker wire.:)

That's funny, I have said that a hundred times at least. Well, dont forget, different things are important to different people. I have actually heard people looking in my trunk at my amps and subs, and making comments like "I wonder if all that makes his car any faster." I havn't yet responded to any of those comments. But then I get a lot of positive comments, and that makes up for it. John
Rick Bandy Apr 5th, 06, 11:50 PM Zach,
I just got my speakers and radio mounted along with a 10 CD changer in the trunk. It consists of ;
1. Sony AM/FM Receiver(with hidden Cassete player behind face plate)
2. Sony 10 CD Changer- Both 1 & 2 purchased on ebay for $79.00
3. Rear Speakers Custom Autosound Stealth speakers $115.99 new e-bay
4. Front Speakers 4 inch pioneer 70 watt Pep Boys $39.99
5. Plastic Radio under dash enclosure (circa 1970's NOS ebay $7.99)
*I welded up a steel frame and mounted it and radio in the enclosure and it is bolted to the floor and sits just above the front of my console.
*Rear Stealth Speakers are mounted to side panels where my rear arm rests were.
*Front speakers are mounted to brackets I fabricated and they set just under the dash facing down on each dash side. They can not be seen unless you look under the dash.
The sound is good and has decent bass but not "booming" which I hate. This set up cost me less than $250.00 and I get good separation and did not have to cut my dash or rear panels. In the 60's and 70's you saw alot of radios and tape decks mounted under the dash.
