Anyone have any experience with a PPG product DCP 21.

I am currently doing research to start my first body and paint job. I came across this product an older article in Car Craft. I did a search for it here and some other boards and did not find any information. This is what the magazine had to say: "DCP 21 is a urethane primer that can be used directly on metal, eliminating the need for multiple primer systems. It can be used as a primer, primer-surfacer, and primer sealer all in one product..."

I did find a couple of websites with some information: http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/feb96/funderct.htm and http://www.taperformance.com/Filler.htm.

Would this eliminate the need for an etch, surface and sealing primers? Or am I totally confused.

hey , yeah most urethane primers can be used as all you have stated, however i do like to u se an etching primer on all basre metal, then sand off for my areas needing body work, then urethane prime whole car or panel let dry then block sand with 400 with guide coat, you can go with more aggressive sand paper but finish with 400-600 as base coat will fill these scratches, if you burn thru in spots just reprime one coat and sand with 400, now you have a nice smooth surface, all a uniform color, and sealed, this way you do not have to seal, as thgat only leads to one more coat to get dust in and one more coat to get orange peel in, whatever you use make sure it is catalyzed( has a hardner) goodluck

Looked throu my ppg P-sheets and did find a DCP 21. PPG lists it as a DTM primer which means Direct To Metal. Ive had a few conversations with our PPG rep about these DTM primers. He said basically they are just plain urethane hi build primers with some epoxy based additives. The epoxy sticks to the metal providing better adhesion.

Also mentioned was that he didnt recommend the DTM primers as an ALL IN ONE PRODUCT. Its meant for production body shops to speed up the process by elminating the application of primer then primer surfacer. Used for when you have bare metal spots next to filler and what great adhesion on the metal, filler and paint. Not meant to be used on an entire bare steel car.

Am not a fan of epoxy primer on bare metal at all, have my reasons. The best process to use for a lasting finish is first apply a wash or self etching primer to bare metal then follow up with a urethane primer surfacer
