I am the original owner of a 69 Chevelle (yeah, do the math, I'm old!) -- yellow w/ black vinyl roof.

I want to re-paint my 69 Chevelle its original Butternut Yellow color (RPO Code 40). How/where do I get the correct paint color?

The lower part of the car (below the lower side molding) is a silvery-gray color. What is the name and RPO code for that? And how/where do I get that correct paint color?

Right now my car is at the body/paint shop and they are trying to eye-match-mix the yellow color by looking at the paint inside the door jamb. I also gave them a teensy hardened paint sample from a bottle of touch-up paint I've had since 1969. They are guessing at the silver color since they sanded most of it away.

But I want to be SURE SURE SURE to get the correct *original* colors.

Help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am in Los Angeles.

P.S. I also have a question about the rear end panel and molding but I'll post that separately.

You just go to the paint distributor for the brand you (or the body shop) want and give them the paint code. They either have it or a crossover(?) (close match) color. I could only find code 52 (Garnet Red) in a base coat/clear coat system with Diamont. I didn't want to gamble on a crossover color with PPG or Dupont.

I use PPG,They have always done a good job for me.Over the years my paint dealers have worked with me to get the right color no matter what brand I was useing. Good Luck.

Just something to think about when trying to get that paint match. You can get the paint to match that color but probably not YOUR car, as damn near every color has variables. GM's med red garnet used from the mid 80's to lates 90's has about 11 variables last time I painted that color, roughly a month or 2 ago.

That color code is just a code for the color not its variables. Am sure Ive confused you but think of it this way. Say all you want to do is repaint ONE fender. The color from the fender to the door would be butt matched, you would see the color difference. But say you blended the color onto the door then you would not see any diff.

Basically am saying you WONT get your car matched but just a close guess of what it should be.

Hate to say but those NEW CORRECT color codes from PPG, dupont who ever are nothing more then a simple guess. They have much better things to do then match a color thats 30 some years old...Eric

I just painted my 69ss Gold Met..code 65. I called the paint linriary people at Standox..thats what we have at the shop and they came up with the formula. It was the closest match..other than a little white to brighten it up a bit. Im actually very pleased with the color..but when you own a bodyshop I guess it wouldnt have mattered if I didnt..woulda made the guy repaint it!
