I just traded a set of old ladder bars for a SS hood for my 72 Malibu, its got a slight bend on the drivers side near the hinge area and the corners are bent a little, but overall seems to be in great shape except covered in rust like it might have sit out in the rain for a long time, the question is..how or what needs to be done to get all that rust off the hood so it can be primered and then worked over....thanks in advance http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I used Oxy-Solv to get surface rust off a trunk lid. Sprayed the solvent on the rusty areas, worked it in with a steel wool pad, and took off the oxidation with a scotchbrite pad. Worked ok, but a lot of work scrubbing. I've heard that muriatic acid is also a good way to get the corrosion off, provided you don't let it sit on the surface for too long.

isn't there some kind of bead blasting or something like that, that can be done also???

I wouldn't blast a big, flat piece of metal with anything abrasive enough to take off rust--maybe soda blasting, but I'm pretty sure that's gonna leave all the corrosion untouched. Ever consider having it dipped and E-coated?

I had the same issue. Was told by a blaster that he could do it with out too much heat build-up if he stood farther back and swept the hood instead of blasting one area and moving slowly.
