Do you think it's worth having black? Are they a pain to keep looking good? I'm really thinking of going with black/white stripes for my '70, but in southern CA, it's hard to keep a car clean due to dust (not to mention door dings, heat, etc). Just looking for thoughts from anyone who has black. Thanks!

Mine is Black. The wife spends a lot of time with the California Duster to keep it looking good. It is worth the trouble.

Thanks TDW. That's good to hear. I'm trying to decide between black/white and grey/black. Shadow grey looks great, and should show dust less than black. But in bright light, the grey just looks a little light to me. I don't mind the cleaning, I just wanted some reassurance from you guys!

My 71 was Black with Silver stripes...it was a pain to keep clean, BUT nothing nicer than a deep black paint job when it's cleaned up! Gotta have STRAIGHT body work though. It shows every wiggle. My 64 is two tone, black on top. I think it's worth the clean up! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

It's worth it.

Mine isn't black. Have a black Z71 and black Trailblazer. They're more work to keep clean.

BUT, there is nothing better looking then a clean polished black finish. Do it!

MarkM,
That is one outstanding '71!

Nice job!

Thanks for all the replies. Support group. ;) Mark, that is a beauty!

Finally, I have a dark blue Z71, and although it's hard to keep looking clean, it's a truck that I offroad in, so it's not so important. But a Chevelle...well, I'd like to keep it in it's prime!

Well that shouldn't be too hard if you don't do any offroading in it! You're going to keep it clean and polished anyway, you know you will.

I really wanted to do the three tone black for my 67(black interior, vinyl roof, exterior) but now im leaning towards a metallic grey color. Saw it on a 67 nova and fell in love with the color. Theres a lot of black chevelles out there but its hard to find them that have good bodywork done on them. If i decide not to go with a metallic grey then i will go with black. It looks nice on almost any car.

BTW, AWSOME 71 convertible. I'm not a big fan on convertibles but thats probably one of the nicest 71 convert iv seen. good job.

I have to agree. I love my black car but it is very hard to keep clean. Hard to keep it clean on the way to shows, etc, but when you look at it right after a wash..nothing like it. Pics in my sig if you want to see..

Wyatt...I have a 70 Z28 that is shadow grey. The dust shows on the Chevelle a million times more than on the Z. Both are nice colors. Black is my first choice.

Black is a great color. Hard to keep clean but oh so nice when it is. Last black car I had was my '76 Trans Am. But anything looks good in black as long as the body is straight.

I must like black, since I have two black cars and a black pickup. Silver or grey is one of the easiest colors to keep looking clean. But at least if a black car looks clean, you know it is clean.

Here are a couple of pics of my El Camino - I hope they load.

Well it's not a chevelle, but my Dad owns a '96 Beretta Z26(bought brand new)in black and since he's owned the car he takes it every week to a detailing place and it still looks brand new but it does shows a little discoloring/peeling on the plastic body pieces only, So I don't think you have to worry on a steel car, but what you can see when your up close is the nicks from road debris in the front, but I guess that's every car. Were also in SoCal.

Love my black car when it's first cleaned and detailed before a show or cruise-in, but you gotta keep the duster handy. I usually have to go over it every 30 minutes or so to keep it dust free....but it's worth it!

my dad has a slate grey dodge ram with the hemi, and ill tell you its not fun keeping that clean either. It shows the dirt just as bad as the black, it loses that luster/shine after just a day or two of driving, i think his old black ram looked cleaner than this color. Anything metallic is like night and day after being washed.

California Duster in the back seat is a must!, but well worth it.

I’ve had 2 black 70 Chevelles, a black Monty Carlo, black I ROC Camaro, black 91 K5 Blazer and a black Plymouth laser (P.O.S. I drove for 3 months after the Blazer was stolen) I’m on my third 1970 SS and It’ll be black too. You’re going to wash it before you go out anyway! - Once you go black……

My kids are black and I dont know why?? Another thing about black is that you get sick as the dings and scratches collect through the years.Everything shows. People can fart next to it then a ding apears.Figure possibly another paint jobin a couple years. Lord forbid you have to work on. I must say my car is gonna be black like my kids.

As you'll see if you go with black, you wash it in the morning and you fight the dust the rest of the day. Black looks fantastic with a straight body, but if you don't stay with the up keep, it will show heavily. And if you don't use that duster daily and let it sit for a few days its time to wash again. Also to use that Duster you must have a fresh coat of wax or you'll be seeing heavy spider webs in the paint. After a Drive, I dust it off and the car cover goes on.

Ok here's another vote for black, looks awesome when well kept but nasty when not. So which system gives the best look, basecoat/clearcoat or singlestage? One advantage to singlestage is any sctaches that may occure will not show as white. The last black car I did I used a single stage urethane and added 50% clear to the last two coats, sure looked deep and wet. Bob

BlackRat, Ed Pienta has one of the nicest Black 67's on the planet, he still wins Best Paint at shows after 10 years of wearing this paint. I hope he will pop in and give his opinion. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I would like to do my 69 in black. With a black vinyl top. Would it be ok to paint the whole car black and add a vinyl top later, over the black paint? Do most of the black Chevelles have vinyl tops? Or what is your prefference?

Ok here's my $.02 As far as painting a car black, it had BETTER be STRAIGHT!!!!! If not, there are many other colors out there that will help you make the car look good, but black is not one of them. Also if you intend on driving and washing this car frequently I would think twice about black.. It may look good for a while but I think that the fine micro scratches will take their toll. As far as painting one badbobb71 nailed it with single stage...mixed with clear. I personally would never clear a black car unless it was a newer car that already had clear on it.
All in all there is probably no nicer color for a clean straight Chevelle, regardless of year, if you are prepared to pay the consequences.. Ed
Oh, and Thanks Leo.
If I could figure out how to post a photo here I would!

Thanks for all the insight guys. BlackRat, I will be driving (and washing) the car a lot. You think that will be a problem? The car is straight right now, and when it's done, it'll be close to perfect. My uncle is doing the resto, and I've watched him put out the straightest classics since I was a kid. He likes black, even though it's harder to get right. Anyway, it's the long term that I'm worried about. I have a question that may be hard to answer, so I'm just looking for ballpark here. But if a super straight, black 'velle is driven frequently (5 times a week) how long can I expect a quality paint job to still look good (given that I take care of it and have no major issues)? 5 years or so? And try to post that black '67! That's the year I originally wanted, but the '70 came along instead.

I've heard of a few other people putting the rocker molding on SS's in the past.
In fact I kinda like it myself since there isn't much chrome on the SS but I'd never hear the end of it if I put it on mine.

I thought about going black on mine. I have to admit it sure looks nice. I do like the darker colors myself on Chevelles.

Someone asked for a personal opinion, and that's all this is, my feelings and what I like.

I like the vinyl top on it and I like it to contrast with the body color.

Have you ever seen a 57 Chevy with a 2 tone paint scheme as opposed to a single color? The contrasting colors really set the car off in my opinion.

Since the car will be a dark color, I am going with a white vinyl top. I have looked for Chevelles with white vinyl tops, and even at Chevellabration the number of white vinyl tops you can find on all years can be counted on one hand with fingers left over.

I also like being different though smile.gif
