Hello. This is my first post so bear with me. I just bought a 68 Chevelle SS. The original 396 has been replaced with a 454. It has a 4spd. That im pretty sure is a Muncie. Im having a problem with it getting stuck in gear. Sometimes 1st gear sometimes 2nd gear. If I get under the car and wiggle the linkage a bit it will work ok for a while then get stuck again. I removed the shifter which is a Hurst comp. plus #3914340 and the linkage rods. The trans. seams to shift fine when I turn the plates by hand. I tried replacing the bushings and spring clips on the rods but it still gets stuck in gear. When I removed the shifter it seamed to have a little play in it.

Will the shifter being wore out cause it to get stuck in gear? I looked at the Hurst website and from what I can tell this shifter is not meant for this transmission. I would like to order a new shifter, rods, bushings, clips, mounting plate, handle, and hardware. Can anyone let me know the Hurst part # or #’s I need to put the correct shifter package together for this car?

Thanks,
Marty

Did you adjust the shifter (shifter in neutral with guidepin/drillbit, rods unhooked from shifter, trans levers in neutral, etc)?

No I haven’t. When I took the rods off they were adjusted correctly. I didn’t adjust them while they were off so I figured it would be fine when I put them back on. The 1st and 2nd gear arm needs to be adjusted but the adjuster is as short as it will go. Can anyone give me directions on how to adjust the shifter linkage?

Thanks

Drop all the shifter rods, insert guidepin into hole with shifter in neutral, then insert 3rd and 4th rod adjusting for free insertion into trans lever. Do 1st and 2nd the same way, then reverse. Remove guidepin then check for correct shifting, readjust if necessary. Don't forget to check the front and rear travel stops. That should do it! Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I ordered a new shifter and install parts yesterday. I hate waiting for parts!!!! One more question. The hole in the floor for the shifter is about 5” x 7”. I’m not sure why it’s so big. It looks like a factory cut. Anyway, any suggestions on how to cover it up? I can put some sheet metal over the hole but the carpet is cut away to. The carpet is in really good shape so I really don’t want to replace it. Is there any kind of oversized trim ring for a boot?

Thanks,
Marty

I'm not sure of the dimensions on a 68, but, if it looks like a factory cut, you should be able to use a factory boot and retainer to cover up the hole. I would take a look at our sponsor's website for the parts you need.
