: What type of paint/primer to use

As many of you know, due to unfortunate events, I am going to have to strip my car myself and perhaps have it painted later. I am currently doing research on what to use. Well, I know that what type of primer I use will depend on what kind of paint I put on. But what kind of paint do I use? I am really thinking of Acrylic Enamel. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I want to go for a single stage paint to go for originality and lower cost for a car that is mostly parked in the garage anyway. So is this a good type of paint to use?
can anyone recommend a type of paint/primer I could use... The color is butternut yellow, if that matters. I am not going to be cheap, but I don't want to be expensive either. I want something that will look slick and original, just like my car did before I had it painted. But what's it gonna cost?

It's better to use one manufacturers system. But in word, URETHANE.

i uae dupont basecoat/clearcaot. the base goes on and works like primer( you really have to try to mess it up) and the clear allows you to colorsand and buff, which is where any paint job is made or lost. it does cost about $500 to $700 for materials going this way but you will have a long lasting quality paint job that you can be proud of, and from what i have read from your experiances you need an outstanding job to make up for you recent misfortions. good luck and have fun. just remember, its better to drive an ugly chevelle than driving a good looking ford!!! urethane primer for sure. Dupont sells a single stage urethane that will hold up better than enamel. It's called chroma one. PPG sells a single stage as well. Trust me, forget all about enamel. It had it's day for other vehicles. Urethane is the way to go now days.

Huck,

Go to a good body shop supply store. Get literature on a paint system. Stick with one manufacturer from self etching primer to top coat. Urethane is the only way to go.

I personally have used both DuPont and Sherwin-Williams systems and I like them both

I read about your troubles, I wish you were closer. Good Luck!

I too am in a simular delemia, I have always used an Acrylic Enamel w/ a clear/pearl. But I have been talked into the base/clear coat urathane. Actually 3 coats of clear w/ pearls over a metallic base. The only problem I'm comming up with is the whole system appears to be a little "thinner" when applied. I am fond of the thick nail polish look that you get with enamel/clear, but I also want the durability that supposably comes with the urathane. I'm going to take the plunge and hope she comes out as good as everyone says it should. I'm having a shop do mine, don't want to muff this one up.
