My brother has a 65 Impala and he was doing the brakes and says there is some sort of spring steel coil around the outside of the drums...all 4 wheels...that fits down in a groove on the drum. What is it for?

Thanks

Rob

Do you have a picture? The only thing I could think of if its on the drum itself is to help keep down squeaks and noise when braking. Sort of an anti squeak type of device I would think.

That's what it is. As far as I know, it's only on factory drums, I have never seen any replacement drums with the spring. Have never seen any loose replacement springs either, but wouldn't be surprised if it exists as a repro part.
