: 1970 Bumper Pad falling off

I had my bumpers rechromed about 5 years ago during the restoration. The guy who was doing most of the body and interior work put the rubber SS bumper pad on the bumper.
It's currently falling off. And I have a paint chip on the hood and paint bubble on the door, and a hole from a mouse in the headliner, but thats a different story. Anyway, I want to remove it, remove the adhesive, and reaffix the bumper pad.
I have a few questions..
What is a safe on chrome solvent to help remove the adhesive? Can I use the same solvent on the bumper pad itself? I want a good mating surface for the pad-to-chrome for the adhesive, so it sits flat and dosen't come off again, atleast for a few years.
What type of adhesive should I use to reaffix the bumper pad?
And third, its about 30-40 deg or colder here in Mass. Is it a bad idea to work with adhesives in this weather? I know for a fact spraypainting in 15 deg weather didn't work out all that well..

I assume there are normal solvents that would work, but I can get carbon tetrachloride if its warranted, but I think that may be too aggressive for the chrome and probably the bumper pad..

thanks alot..
I'd like to have the car all dolled up for super chevy in late may.. thats if I my engine back.. graemlins/clonk.gif

3M makes a great adhesion remover. Comes in a metal qt can called general purpose adhesion remover. Wont harm the chrome, rubber pad or paint, its great stuff.

To reattach the pad you could use some 3M double side tape. The stuff is stronger then hell, the auto makers use the same stuff on their mouldings, almost impossible to remove. Run the tape on the backside of the pad, then use clamps to hold the pad down, let it sit over night and you are done. If you are worried about the temps just bring it in the house. The solvent doesnt smell so it wont stink up the place...Eric

If you use the double sided tape you be able able to see it, it wont look right. I havent tried it but I've read that 3M black heavy duty weatherstrip adhesive will work. Or you can call Year One like I did and they can put you in contact with the maufactures of the correct stuff that comes when you buy a new pad.

I wouldn't use the double-stick tape, it definitely would show. You should talk to someone in the know. You may need to order another rubber pad if it's contaminated with the old incorrect adhesive. Either way, call Ground Up or Year One or OPG and get a tube of the adhesive that comes with the pad. THey ship it out on its own even if you buy the pad. It has a very short shelf life, so they ask you to order it only when you are ready to install.

Good luck.
