I just bought a 1966 el-camino, and I need to know more about what I actually have. On the dash it has Super Sport, a 12 bolt posi (4 link) rear end, and an M21 manuel, and massave chrome. Do I actually have an el-camino super sport (did they actually make them). you can e-mail directly at marqbartlett@msn.com

No such animal as a 66 ElCamino SS. They built two trim levels, ElCamino & ElCamino Custom. Difference was primarily upholstery, upper & lower trim mouldings. Have also seen some with a center side moulding, I am guessing, but I think that was an option all by itself.
An ElCamino could be ordered with almost any option available on a chevelle, except the SS trim. They could be ordered with the following motors, 2 6cyl, 283v8- both 195 & 220hp, 327v8 @ 275hp, 396 both 325 & 360hp. Big blocks had 12 bolt rears. A 325hp elky would not be too rare, and original 360hp would be a real find.

Marq,

I have also been told there were no SS trimmed El Caminos in 1966 BUT I had a friend who's dad bought him a one owner 1966 El Camino (in 1969)
that had the following; 396 4 speed, buckets, console, and all the SS trim including the hood.
But go figure.....they didn't make that model, maybe someone cloned a 3 year old car....NOT.

It is my understanding that almost ALL options that were available on a chevelle were available on an Elky. That would include: buckets, console, guages etc. My 66 Elky was originally a 396-325 hp powerglide- buckets, console-12 bolt & aux. frame braces-factory air-power windows. Dates match on rear end and engine, block stamp matches ser#. This car is a custom with wide rocker mldgs, w/o mldgs, and rocker extn mldg. behind rear wheels. All sheetmetal appears to be original. Buckets and console were factory with all correct welded mountings.
In later years the ss became more of a "package" as is true with many other trim and option packages.
Hope this helps.

P.S. just a thought---It only takes four bolts to change a hood.

See they cloned cars way back then !!!
Yes they did.. a few small block 66 /67's in the area has SS hoods installed... in the Late 60's
But GM made no REAL- El-Camino SS's till 1968.

The only true SS trim would be the emblems (grill and quarterpanel and dash-glovebox) and the SS hood... Everything else was the same as what was available on the Malibu and Supersport and other Chevelles. Even the SS was standard with a bench seat and no guages in 66...

The El Caminos were also available with the 375 HP L78 engine...

The El Camino Custom had trim levels the same as the Malibu and SS, while the base El Camino was more like the 300 or 300 Deluxe, including the side "belt-line" trim... The Custom had the Wheel Opening moldings, as well as ribbed rocker moldings and extensions like the SS (although the extensions are much different from SS extentions), while the base version had no rocker or w/o moldings...

I have had three 66 BB El Caminos over the years...

The SS El Camino was not available until the 1968 model year.
