In order to fit a transmission that's a lot bigger than what was there before, what's the best way to do it?
Large hammers?
Cut & Weld?
Body lift? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Thanks, in advance, for your help!

What are you puttin in there? A new Allison 6 speed? You did say the 'best' way, not easiest. Get out your cut-off wheel or big nibbler.
Cut out the trans tunnel from where the 'fat' part of the big tranny starts.(Up front) Cut across the tunnel on top. On the sides, just where the sheet metal goes vertical (bending up). On the back cut, across where the tranny ends. Install tranny
and trim if you have to. Take your tunnel piece that you carefully cut out and re-fit it in. You'll have to make 'filler' pieces to 'raise' the old piece. Keep at least an 1" clearance between the trans and floorboards/tunnel. Weld the filler pieces to the cut out piece and then Mig it back to the floor board. This method allows you to keep the factory contour of the top of the tunnel for easy re-installation of a console. replacement carpets are usually large enough to make up the difference.
I've done the sledge hammer thing. It really sucks unless you have a lift and a transmission jack! And you need clearance. A lot of banging and vibration will go through the car if the trans touches the tunnel or floorboards. Do it once, do it right.

Jimmy, you NAILED it! I did want the BEST way. I'll follow your recommendations.
BTW, I'm trying to fit a 700R4 in a Volvo wagon. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif That mighty four-banger under the hood is more than the stock tranny can handle!
